Doyle (Indiana writer) says that we are getting Paintered again by Crean. He doesn't want to leave IU but is using Mizzou (and anyone else that will bother) to push for an extension at IU.

If that's the case, it makes no sense on any level. I guess he realizes that his buyout in the summer (down to $1 million) is cheap enough that someone would pay it so he's going the Haith route and hoping that IU doesn't call his bluff like Mizzou did with Haith.

Crean, if truly interested, was the only obvious slam-dunk pick, IMO. And hell, even at that a lot of folks hated the idea.

He's a C/C+ hire. Much better than what they did last time, a little better than Haith, but not as good as they can do.

Mizzou needs to stop settling for good and try to be great. But it appears Sterk isn't going to do that.

Cuonzo is the Alex Smith of college basketball coaches.
Well my point was to show that he's either under-performed or under-recruited. It had to be one or the other because his results are less than stellar.

Hell, he's 3 years in at both schools so the classes aren't even is own. The talent at TN was inherited from Pearl (I think) and it was top-shelf talent that he did very little with. Now he had less coming in at Cal but also seemed to do a better job of recruiting there.

But in true Homer fashion, Chiefscountry was a whiny **** that decided not to actually defend his guy even to a willing audience. So whatever.

Cuonzo was my top choice to replace Mike Anderson when we ended up with Haith, so I've liked the guy for awhile now. That said, he does seem to do less with his talent than many of his contemporaries.

So expound - do you believe his recruiting success has been overstated? Or that his teams have underachieved relative to the talent he's been able to bring in.

Because it has to be one or the other, does it not? In 6 years with TN and Cal he's routinely pulled in top 10 to top 20 recruiting classes and yet he's only made the tournament twice in that span and has only managed to win 2 tournament games in that period. That's a pretty poor record.

Is that due to talent acquisition? Development? Tactical deficiencies? There has to be something to explain it. Because you can say he's a 'damn good coach' if you'd like, but he seems to be developing a pretty clear record as an underachiever. Why do you think his ceiling would be substantially higher at Missouri? Or more accurately, why should Missouri fans see his ceiling as substantially higher?
I know what he did at Missouri State. He took a team with no talent and was MVC champs by his 3rd year. Lost the MVC tournament championship game in typical Missouri non-MLB team fashion, with a player dribbling a ball off his foot. His last recruiting class he had signed with the Bears mainly followed him to Tennessee - Josh Richardson, Wes Washburn, and Quinton Chievous. Was offered the same salary than Marshall made then $750,000 per year but took the Tennessee job. If he would have stuck around Springfield, Shockers wouldn't have dominated the Valley - it would have been a two team race. He beat Gregg Marshall twice his last year and had a winning record against him at home. Went to Tennessee, by the 3rd year they were a Sweet Sixteen team. And they haven't been back to NCAA since then. Left because the fan base never embraced a black head coach who was different than loud mouth Bruce Pearl. He will also help your St. Louis recruiting which is the biggest problem Missouri faces. But whatever, go bitch and moan about this C hire. Alford was average at Iowa but now looks like a genius in UCLA.

I love you, man. I wish I loved Cuonzo Martin as much as I love you.

At SMS, Martin did a nice job bringing in JUCOs to key that run. I'm friends with the sister of one of them, who is lukewarm on Martin.

But the biggest key to his success was Kyle Weems, wouldn't you agree? A player he inherited. And that program tanked quickly after he left. Losing that Richardson/Washpun class hurt, but where were the recruits from his other time there?

At Tennessee, Martin inherited three 1000 point scorers (almost four - Maymon was a little short but missed a season and a half), and quickly had a fifth drop into his lap (Stokes).

He proceeded to miss the tournament, somehow, in Years 1 and 2. And then barely made it in Year 3 despite having a very good, experienced team, and they went on a run against a fortunate slate (11...6...14) to the Sweet 16.

Then he bounced to Cal, where he inherited three pro guards in Wallace, Mathews, and Bird. He landed his one elite recruiting class in Rabb and Brown, and then paired them with those three last year. A pairing that led to a 4th place PAC finish, needing a run in February to get off the bubble.

And failed to win an NCAA tourney game. With two lottery picks.

This year, he missed it entirely with a lottery pick, and two other pros.

He's Ok. He's not terrible. He just isn't high ceiling.

First year, late start recruiting - went with some flyers to fill roster. One high school recruit started most of his freshman year, got caught his sophomore year breaking the law. Got booted, went to D2 playing in Europe now.

Second year. Went with 2 JUCOs, 2 transfers from smaller D1s. All played a huge role in the championship season. High school recruits were hit by injury bug. One just had bad knees. Really sad because he was going to be a good one. Now a current assistant coach. Another got in a car wreck and never recovered mentally from that. Transferred to SEMO. Otto Porter's cousin by the way. Otto had a great relationship with Zo by the way. He just blew up on the recruiting scene.

Third year. One high school recruit from the western suburbs of St. Louis. Played very well as a freshman. Never developed under Lusk. Program tanked under Lusk, who is just awful.

Regarding Weems. He did inherit him. He was a redshirt freshman Martin's first year. Weems was a package deal with another recruit from Topeka. A little hot shot point guard named Lamont Austin. He stole some cameras, got his ass booted from school and ended up at JUCO then Morehead State I believe. They were both Steve Woodberry recruits who was an assistant at the time. Both were KC Pump and Run AAU team guys which Woodberry had connections with.

CC you're a great poster but come on man this will be Martin's 4th team in 6 years and he's only been to 1 sweet sixteen. This hire would show Mizzou isn't interested in making it to the Final 4. Nice coach who will get you to the NIT and occasional dance that's about it.
