Geno Smith vs Alex Smith - It's on.

It's on now. Geno Smith is probably going to be starting for the Jets this season.

Alex Smith will be the Chiefs QB for the forseeable future. If he's a success, we'll probably get five good years out of him.

So who's gonna win more NFL games over that time period?

Put your ten pounders on the table and make a vote

Alex: 11 wins
Geno: 8 wins

Im not a Geno fan at all, even in college I thought he was fluffed up, but you have to give a kid the benefit of the doubt. I am a huge huge Alex fan. I saw almost every game he played in High school, i saw every game he played in college and pros. Lets be real, he had one of the worst rookie seasons one can remember. 1TD 11picks and i think it was 15 fumbles lost. So Geno gets time and one of the reason he gets it is also because his offense like Alex's at the time lacks serious talent. The D in NY is legit though. I dont think il ever warm up to Geno, but im willing to give him a bit of time.

Sensible.

Alex Smith had 5 different coordinators in 5 years, played on terrible teams, and he had a shoulder injury that wasn't corrected until ~3 years ago.

If we are going to give Alex Smith credit for having been put in a position to succeed and finally realizing his potential the last two seasons as I am inclined to do, then we have to acknowledge that Geno Smith is behind the 8 ball when you consider having been drafted by the Jets and having been significantly overrated going into the draft. He's clearly not ready to start in the league, and too much is being asked of him.

But the entire premise of this thread is "They'll both be starting this year, let's see who's the better QB."

So far, we're seeing it.

Also sensible. Thanks. I am not going to condemn Geno, even though if forced to bet large sums, I'd bet he fails and flames out of the league. Overall, don't care... just an interesting thing to follow, among many things.

That IS hilarious that Clay would start a thread like Geno VS Alex, and then cry about people... oh I don't know.. comparing their play... who'd have thunk it?

Now, Alex Smith is a journeyman, because he was traded to only his second team in year 8, and was immediately made the starter.

We need to define what JOURNEYMAN is.

Jake Delhomme was a journey man. Rich Gannon was a journeyman.

Alex Smith is a quality qb. Big difference.

As for the OP. You made this thread far too soon, you had far too much confidence in Geno to overcome obstacles that were not in his control.

Any time you have a power struggle between your head coach and your GM that is instant doom. The Chiefs have seen it with Haley, Pioli, Browns fans have seen it for years, the 49ers fans saw it with Singletary, Baalke.

If they aren't in lock step, its over.

Now, because Geno had a bad game, Rex has gone out and said that the job is not purely Geno's, (which it should be) and that if Sanchez can come back this season, there is a qb battle.

Shrugs.

Geno is screwed until Rex is gone.

But the title of the OP, not to mention the edit with their week 1 stats, pretty clearly communicates, to me, anyway, "Let's compare these two quarterbacks." That may be a foolish undertaking, or it may be interesting.

But the fact remains, it appears to be what this thread is about. So, to say don't compare them, in this thread, just struck me as somewhat funny.
I agree - this is a QB comparison thread re: Geno vs. Alex, but I think the greater context is "which QB has lasting success? Would Chiefs be better off long term with Geno?"

So in that context, it is fair to compare the 2 QBs, but it is also fair not to hold the rookie to the standard of the Vet. This will serve as a good place for discussing Geno's progress over the years, or until he busts out. Either way, it will take a couple of years at least to see whether the Chiefs would have been better off with Geno Smith.

As somebody who has no faith in Geno Smith to be a solid staring NFL QB, I don't much care either way.

0 turnovers will win you games. He was impressive at times, and down right hideous at times. People underestimate that sometimes not doing the stupid thing(taking a sack, throwing a check down) is the right thing. Field position was a factor because Alex "helped" keep it that way.
