Hyundai expert mechanic question

I would GREATLY appreciate true and knowledgeable advice, not any random guesses or maybe's.

I blew up my air conditioner compressor and my car was towed this morning. It's a 2002 Hyundai XG350L with 123,966 miles. They are giving me two estimates of $1,250 to get back on the road with no warranty and $1,700 to "do it right" and clean out all the metal shavings and do it the right way.

I had someone tell me to inform them to just disconnect the compressor and put a new belt on knowing I would have no A/C but the car would run.

The auto shop told me it's not possible with my car's setup.

Am I being F**ked up the arse or is that true and they can only complete something more major? The thought of spending $1250-1700 on a 11 yr old car makes me sick.

Any actually advice other than "You are being raped", "Burn your car in an AIDS tree fire", or "You need to shove antifreeze down the throat of the mechanic" is greatly appreciated!
