NFL officially moves extra point to 15-yard line

NFL moves extra point to 15-yard line for 2015 season

By Kevin Patra
Around the NFL writer

NFL owners approved the Competition Committee's proposal on extra points for the 2015 season.

The NFL announced the extra point will now be kicked from the 15-yard line with two-point conversions remaining at the 2-yard line. The new rule also gives the defense the ability to score two points on returns.

According to the rule change, if the defense returns a failed two-point try for a touchdown (i.e. on an interception), they will be awarded two points. Under the previous rule the ball was dead on a failed try.

The approved rule, which was decided on a 30-2 vote by NFL owners, was one of three proposals considered by owners Tuesday at the NFL's Spring League Meeting.

Owners considered a proposal by the New England Patriots similar to the adopted plan, but without the defense's ability to score. A plan proposed by the Philadelphia Eagles called for a 15-yard PAT and the ball on the 1- yard line for two-point tries.

The NFL has been tinkering with the PAT in hopes of making it a more difficult and therefore entertaining play for spectators. The latest change might be just the first step of further adjustments in years to come.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport also reported that the Redskins' proposal to have roster cuts done all at once -- moving from 90-man to 53-man rosters prior to the start of the season -- was voted down by owners, per a source.

Correct, they do not count because they do not support your argument, at all.

You are arguing that they can't get rid of the PAT because they wouldn't be able to show as many commercials, and you tried to use the review as an example. Your example is a very bad one, because they would still show the same amount of commercials without a PAT, regardless of the review.

The kickers union probably fought tooth and nail on this one.

Sounds pretty exciting actually.

Look, the PAT is a NON-COMPETITIVE play. The NFL, for safety reasons, eliminated literally EVERYTHING the defense could do to try to affect it. They can't be over the center, they can't overload the line, they can't push teammates, they can't use teammates for leaping. It's an automatic play.

I can't think of another automatic play in all of sports. Where all one side can do is hope for a miracle dropped snap (i.e. a Tony Romo) or something completely absurd.

There is no point to non-competitive plays in professional sports. Sure, you could make TDs an automatic 7, but what's the point of removing excitement from the sport.

And I love the "who wants to watch kickers" argument. It's FOOTball. Kickers kicking FGs to win games isn't exactly a new thing. Kickers had HUGE impacts on several Patriots Super Bowls right off the top of my head. The Panthers kicker kicking out of boudns gave teh Patriots ridiculous field position for the game winning drive, which resulted in a game-winning FG by Vinatieri. Vinatieri's FG to win against the Rams. Vinatieri's stupid error in kicking directly to Desmond Howard in the SB against the Packers, which resulted in a backbreaking TD return.

Special teams are part of the game. A significant part. Many coaches, and fans, pay lip service to it. "all three phases" means nothing to them. But it is critical, and it should be. It's not all about the QB and the pass-rushing left outside linebacker...

Why is that the worst?
Basically, you're just arguing that an XP should be an expected, automatic, point on the board.

The only thing I can think of is the intentional walk, with the silly ritual of throwing four balls way outside. (a wild pitch on a IBB is about as rare as the missed PAT, maybe rarer)

Even there, for next season MLB is seriously thinking about letting the manager just hold up four fingers to send the batter to first.

that's a wonderful summation, but incorrect. You said you never remember a commercial before an extra point. I provided an example, you said 'that doesnt count'. Ok, fine. Im really not *that* concerned about it.

I dont think the owners are going to get rid of the XP. Period. Forgive my cynical comments about incessant commercials. I'll try to watch the game tapes better next year, K?

Yep, that is a pretty good one. They should do the four fingers thing, just to shorten the game. ANYTHING to shorten a baseball game and eliminate wasted time is a good thing. Damn sport is pretty much unwatchable.

So, this is not an aberration? Fine, I'll just put you on ignore then. Maybe you enjoy hurling insults, but I'm not going to play.

I do not take people off ignore, so good-bye forever.
