Amazon announces Fire TV
http://sourcefed.com/amazon-announces-fire-tv/
Amazon has dove in head first into video hardware, announcing it’s new set-top device: Amazon Fire TV. Clearly a competitor for Apple TV and Roku, the $99 device is an internet-connected set-top box which uses voice commands that you speak into its remote control. It will also serve as a gaming console, and consumers have the option to purchase a separate $39 controller that is paired with the box. Amazon has claimed the device is 3 times more powerful than Apple TV and is based on Android and HTML 5, which means it should be easy for companies to bring their apps over to the platform. It supports Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, Crackle, iHeartRadio and Vevo. Sadly, HBO Go and Vudu are not supported. Fire TV also has a predictive engine called “ASAP,” which pre-loads content it thinks you are going to watch, so it can start without any buffering or load time. This feature learns over time and gets better at suggesting content you like. In a prior announcement made this weekend, Amazon said it will be turning six shows from its Amazon Originals program into a full series. The shows, which were selected after viewer feedback from the pilot episodes, include ’The After’, ‘Bosch, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street’, ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, ‘Transparent’ and ’Wishenpoof’. Amazon also renewed ’Alpha House’ — starring John Goodman — for a second season. As far as gaming is concerned, the console will offer titles such as “Minecraft” and “The Walking Dead”. Many of the titles will be free or cost a little as $1.85 to play. |

Interesting don't know if its worth it to bust root to add this update. For those with un-rootable Amazon TV this is great news.

These instructions will allow you to install CWM: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-insta...mazon-fire-tv/ Once you do that, you can install pre-rooted updates that will keep you at the most recent version of FireOS available while maintaining root.

For $79 you can get a refurbished Fire TV. Same warranty as new.

so i got annoyed by the terrible amazon UI and found a simple launcher that takes over when you push the home button. The nice thing is it includes all the sideloaded apps so no need for llama.

On a separate note - if you all haven't seen the project "Sideclick" on Kickstarter, I'd highly recommend doing so. It's a universal remote accessory for your tv that connects to your existing device remote. I'm already in for two!

Also - has anyone rooted their FTV yet? I've been thinking about it, but don't know what the net benefit would be, as I already have XBMC sideloaded and all that. Any other benefits?

It depends on which fire you have. the newer ones have a fuse or something that blows when rooted. kinda sucks.

My box is rooted, so I have it boot straight to SPMC. I have links to Android apps like Netfix/Pandora/NFL Rewind/etc in XBMC. So I launch any Amazon app I need from there. Don't really ever mess with the Amazon menu much..
Root allows you to use alternative launchers, get control of core settings that aren't normally accessible, reorganize the Amazon menu to add/remove categories, install otherwise unsupported services like Plex server, expand USB capabilities like using NTFS/ext formatted drives, etc.

Are the links to Netflix in any specific repository?

Netflix isn't an XBMC plugin from a repo. It's an actual Android app(.apk). I got it straight from Amazon. But you can also load it and other versions via sideload too. I simply have a link in XBMC which launches the Android Netflix app. When done with Netflix, I exit that and I'm right back in XBMC. Same with Pandora and others. You need a different XBMC skin than Confluence though, to put Android apps alongside XBMC plugins. I use Amber skin, but there's many that would work. Aen Nox, Metro, Rapier, etc. 1.0 apk: https://www.dropbox.com/s/86mdav96fb...400-v1.0.0.apk

So this is interesting. My wifes best friend gave me her WWE Network login so I can watch Attitude Era Raw. The official WWE Network app runs like dogshit on the Fire TV. Freezing, bufferfing, low quality video.
I downloaded the WWE Network Addon for Kodi and that thing runs like a dream. Still in early development, but alreday has better PQ and no buffering for me on the same FireTV. How the hell does a fan made addon function better than the official app?
