ILB Gerald Hodges visiting Chiefs

Per ProFootballTalk

"Gerald Hodges will visit the Chiefs, per source." - @ProFootballTalk

Would be a nice addition. A run stuffer who had a really nice year in SF in 2016. More importantly, it would get us closer to drafting that QBOTF...

'Depth' is what draft picks are for. You don't pay $3+ million to Jah Reid for depth.

And you don't pay a punter $5 million for anything. I've gone over this 'Colquitt is the greatest' stuff before and he just isn't. He was outside the top 10 in net punting average again this year, which happens every couple of years for him. And he's never inside the top 5. He's just a fine punter but the difference between him and a slightly below average punter is about a yard per punt.

If you can't get that out of your STs unit, then I guess 'Dave Toub: STs Superstar" is just a myth.

Paying $5 million for a punter is ridiculous.
I don't know. He's arguably the 2nd best punter in the league and is paid like it. Him and Hekker have pretty much the same contracts

He's also arguably the 10th best punter in the league and the point is that you can't hardly slide a piece of paper between the gap from 2-10.

It's just not a position worth paying for the top of the line guy.

My question is where the hell is Zach Brown? Haven't heard a peep about him.

He would be an awesome addition I believe.

It's like saying that Alex Smith is really good at avoiding turnovers - sure, and that's part of his game. It's not good enough to justify keeping him around.

Dustin Colquitt does that one thing well - but he's below average at directional and distance punting. He's just a fine punter; he damn sure ain't worth $5 million.
Isn't distance punting a product of terrible offense? Only reason you would ask your punter to punt for distance is if your team is constantly backed up on their own side of the field. The chiefs offense isn't constantly backed up so we never get to see colquitt kick for distance.

Would you say our offense is good? Average?

I'd say it's hard to say with a straight face that Dustin Colquitt's net punting average was low because our offense was just too damned good.

We spent many a game stuck in neutral offensively. He had plenty of opportunities to bomb a kick, he just doesn't have a very powerful leg. Hell, he was never a power punter and he's gotten worse as he's aged.

He's a one-trick pony. It's a good trick, but it's still the only thing he does well.

They were average to above average in terms of moving the ball. Dustin Colquitt doesn't have to punt the ball deep in our side of the field often.

KC was the #1 team in starting field position this year, IIRC.

A credit to the defense creating turnovers and Tyreek returning punts.

Nah, field position is way too important still and especially if our d is still very suspect against the run between the 20's.

This is a deep draft where we have multiple late rounders.

I bet we could get the best punter in college football in the 6th and let the coaches get the best out of him.

I doubt there's any dropoff and the team saves almost 4m.

KC can make 2-3 moves like that to create a bunch of cap space.

This team won 12 games last year with an average at best QB and devastating injuries to the front 7.
Look at what we're getting next season that we didn't have before:

Terrance Mitchell
Justin Houston
Jaye Howard
Allen Bailey
Parker Ehinger

We are a playoff caliber team alone with what we have.

Time for Dorsey to find some great players to stock up the depth at OLB, QB, RB and CB. This will again be a top 5 roster. Hopefully it has the QBOTF on it next month.

but when he does it is highly valuable and not every punter can pin it inside the 10 like Colquitt IHMO.

How many of Colquits punts even get returned much less with room to roam for yardage? Nut keeps ignoring that. KC DOMINATED special teams play the last couple years.
