That doesn't work. Colon is on the 40-man, he never left the 40-man roster.

He must be on the 25-man active roster by midnight tonight. The two 60-day DL guys are not taking up a spot. Hosmer is taking a 40-man spot, but not a 25-man spot.

Someone on our 25-man roster needs to get "hurt" and replaced by Colon tonight.

Gotcha. But unless I'm reading this wrong, they don't have to currently be on the 25. Just had to have at some point prior to Sept. 1st.

To be eligible for the postseason active roster, a player must have either been on that team's active roster or disabled list as of midnight ET on August 31 of that year and not placed on the 60 day disabled list after August 1.[3] The one exception is for replacing players on the disabled list. Any injured player who is eligible for postseason play may be replaced by any player that was on an active or disabled list for either that team or any of its affiliated minor league teams at midnight August 31.[4] Players who do not participate in one game in the Majors before September 1 with the team's organization of the regular season will be declared ineligible for the team's 25-man active roster of the postseason and must be placed on either the restricted list or the secondary squad.

Players who are part of the team's final roster regardless of spending a majority of time in the Minors, being acquired in trades or waivers, serving the rest of the season on any inactive transactions such as the disabled list, or signing later for the team in the regular season will be eligible to receive a championship ring when the team wins the World Series.

In this case, "as of" does not mean "anytime before this date". It is a snapshot in time.

OK I just found a couple reliable sources that clears everything up. Remember this?

It appears the latter is the case. Brand-new in 2014, MLB apparently changed rule 40 to say that anyone on the 40-man roster (instead of the 25-man roster) on August 31st is postseason-eligible. MLB doesn't normally put their constitution on the internet and no one has managed to leak it yet.

I guess MLB got tired of the shenanigans teams kept trying to pull every year with the old rule, so they said "screw it, everyone on the 40-man is eligible for selection".

I think we still have to select 25 players for the playoff roster before every playoff series though, I don't think you can roll into the ALDS with 40 players available.

Makes sense, because it'd be a fireable offense to be dumb enough to send Colon down to clam Nix off waivers and keep your backup infielder off the playoff roster.

Yeah, apparently this isn't the first time the topic came up. When the Royals sent down Aaron Crow a few days ago, that alarmed some people who were familiar with the old rules, but DM explained that the rules have changed, and that the Royals would not have sent down Crow if that would have made him ineligible for the playoffs.

Also, if anyone is wondering about the CBA, on the topic of postseason roster, the CBA basically just says "see MLB rule 40".

The CBA has everything related to pay, options, working conditions, contracts, etc but it defers to MLB on postseason eligibility, so MLB did not have to consult with the players or collectively bargain on this change.

That's what I thought I heard. Which is why they sent Colon down because they wanted to get Nix on for more options. I also thought I heard that they would be eligible to take 28 because of the injuries to Hoch, Mariot, etc.
