A year ago, the NFL seemed to be poised to expand the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams, effective in 2015. And then someone apparently realized that it didn’t make much sense to expand the playoffs before the year in which the playoffs would be expanded.

So it’s now 2015, and there’s no proposal for expanding the playoffs as the league meetings commence — along with plenty of talk that there won’t be expansion of the playoffs this year. So Peter King of TheMMQB.com asked Commissioner Roger Goodell why the subject had cooled.

“I don’t think it’s cooled at all,” Goodell said. “There are a lot of factors that go into it. One, we want to be right when we do it. . . . It’s something that we think has got a lot of merit from a competitive side, because it would actually add more teams to the race as you get toward the end of the season. There’s the broadcasting side of it. When would you play that extra game?”

No one is proposing that we replace the PAT with nothing. Have the game as it is now, except instead of kicking the PAT, just tell the ref you'll take the point so we can immediately move on with the game. If you want to go for 2, fine but its only 6 points if you fail.

The drop kick didn't go anywhere, its still in the rules. No one does it because you are not rewarded for doing it the hard way. You'd have to make drop kicks worth more points.

edit: Apparently in arena football, drop kick PAT's are worth 2, and drop kick FG's are worth 4. Its still rarely attempted even with the added point.

And did you notice that none of the game's "speed the pace" rules seemed to be controversial except this one? Speeding up the game is very different from physically taking plays out of the game. Baseball has an actual problem with fans getting bored with the pace of game. The NFL does NOT have that problem. The NFL is fixing a problem that doesn't exist and they are deleting plays in the process.

It's rare that a pitcher botches an intentional walk. It's rare that a kicker misses a PAT. But it once costed the Saints a playoff berth when Carney duffed an XP. It once costed the Cowboys a playoff game on what was practically an XP when Romo botched a hold. Botched snaps have ruined long snapper careers -- none more ceremoniously than Trey Junkin. Once upon a time, Philip Rivers botched a snap on a simple kneel-down attempt.

These things almost never happen, but there are huge moments in football history when they did. And we want to take that way so that we can watch 30 seconds more of commercials? Again, any rule that takes plays out of the game not because of fairness, but because of TV time is a stupid, stupid rule. I don't care how "automatic" the extra point has become. It still requires a clean snap, hold, and kick.
