ESPN Outside the Lines Report: Goodell went easy on Spygate

It's been all over ESPN Radio all morning. Report says that Goodell threw the book at Brady because he gave them a break on Spygate.

I didn't hear it all, but they alleged that the NFL destroyed evidence because they videoed a shitton of practices and Goodell wanted to limit the exposure to a few games. They said that Belichick even admitted to doing like 40 games but Goodell covered it up.

A couple other points that were brought up that were interesting was that Martz came out and said Goodell asked him to put out a statement saying he was satisfied with the investigation for the good of the league and he is absolutely not.

Also, the reporter said that former Pat players admitted to the Pats sending a low level guy to the other lockerroom while they were warming up to steal the scripted plays that most teams start with.

I haven't seen the piece, but a lot of the things this reporter spouted off were pretty damning. Usually OTL is pretty good, but this had a lot of conspiracy theory tone to it.

Has anyone read it?

Err...no. Stealing signals (or at least trying to) is universal. All teams do it every weekend.

The Dolphins bought game tapes of the Patriots to study Tom Brady’s audibles before a MNF game in December, 2006. Zach Thomas admitted to knowing all Brady’s signals from the tape study. The league ruled that such tape study was okay.

TBH, I think there is some conspiracy going on here. I think the Patriots are cheaters, plain and simple. I think Brady had balls doctored to suit his fancy. I think BB had staff stealing signs well after 2006. I think he had people entering locker rooms to steal playbooks as mentioned. I think the guy is a great coach that is willing to break the rules to give himself every advantage to win. Having said all that, I think Roger Goodell is a power hungry lying sack of shit. I could see a scenario like this:

Goodell sweeps most of the information about Spygate under the rug. He has evidence destroyed, and has peoples statements doctored to make it seem less than it was. But, there was just enough evidence, and a Superbowl championship or two on the line that he had to act as though he was bringing down the hammer, all to protect the image of the NFL, and ultimately HIMSELF.

Several years go by. All the while, the Pats continue to skirt the rules. Time after time, this shit goes on. Kraft, being the smug owner that thinks he's above the rules, keeps allowing the envelope to be pushed.

Finally, Goodell has had enough of someone else pushing HIS rules. Time to flex the muscles. Along comes an allegation about deflated footballs. Wham! Goodell is gonna show em who's boss this time. Except the federal judge hands him his ass.

So, Goodell figures, he may have lost at the whole Deflategate thing, but how about having ESPN open up the whole Spygate thing. He won't look good for having had evidence destroyed, but he won'l look as bad as the Patriots for having cheated the entire league for over a decade and 4 titles.

Far fetched? Maybe. I'll bet there is some truth to it though.

Sorry, but you're going to pick up a tiny fraction of the information with those other techniques. Having video is what allows for deep analysis and building it into the plan for virtually every play. That's why the Pats were willing to tape over their cameraman's logo and prep him on how to handle if he got caught.

Just for the record, the rule that led to Spygate didn't exist until 2006, AFTER the Patriots won the first three Super Bowls.
