*****The Armani Watts Thread*****

More to come...

Quote:
Overview
Watts is a four-year starter for the Aggies, living up to the four-star recruiting status that accompanied him to A&M (he had nine interceptions as a high school senior to earn first-team Class 4A All-State notice in Forney, Texas). He led the team with three interceptions as a true freshman free safety in 2014, recording 59 tackles, two for loss, and nine pass breakups. Watts put up 126 tackles in 13 starts in his second year on the team, six of them going for losses, and he intercepted one pass while breaking up two others. Watts' junior campaign was cut short by a leg injury, but he still made 56 tackles, six for loss, two interceptions and two forced fumbles in nine starts. He earned third-team Associated Press All-American and second-team All-SEC honors in 2017, starting 12 games, posting 87 tackles, 10 for loss, four interceptions, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and two blocked kicks.

Watts is a feast or famine player whose biggest faults are often self-inflicted and not due to a lack of talent or athletic ability. He's smooth and athletic and plays with the instincts and ball skills to flip the field on the next level. Watts' success as a professional will likely depend on work ethic and consistency as a tackler.

Strengths
  • Very impressive athletic ability
  • Loose and flexible through lower body with ability to swivel and swerve around the field
  • Possesses above-average cover skills and soft hands
  • Has feet and fluidity to line up in man
  • Plays with instincts and timing
  • Recognizes opportunities to undercut routes and make plays on the ball
  • Has twitchy burst to break on throws
  • Anticipates and triggers to make plays outside of his coverage area
  • Good leaper with high-point ability
  • Rangy
  • Slick with ability to dart into crevices and find tackle angles near the line of scrimmage
  • Has striking ability
  • Able to blow up screen passes with downhill quickness
Weaknesses
  • Lacking ideal size and build
  • Has missed games on three different occasions
  • Too many feast or famine plays
  • Inconsistent and not always trust-worthy in run support
  • Loses leverage in pursuit and overruns the play
  • Picks and chooses when to square up and tackle with technique
  • Will opt for ankle-diving too frequently
  • Urgency in pursuit is lacking from the backside
  • Inconsistency at finishing plays costs his defense at times
  • Gets caught guessing on routes

I never had any interest in becoming an NFL scout. I like to talk about the draft, discuss players and their values, formulate my own opinions, but never wanted to be an NFL scout.

The biggest reason? I have a family. The time commitment away from home to be an NFL scout is insane. You might be home two days a month during the football season. It's not for someone with a family.

Is it hard to be an NFL scout? No, not especially, provided you played or coached football at the collegiate level, took classes in physiology and biomechanics, are a very proficient communicator (both oral and written), and take a 3rd party course in writing for scouting. Then, you better either know somebody or put your application in and hope they like what they see. You know, kind of like any other job that requires some baseline knowledge beyond 10th grade (oh, you wouldn't know that).

Aside from taking a 3rd party course in writing for scouting and knowing a regional scout/director or GM personally, I do have all of those prerequisites. I don't want to be an NFL scout. I don't pretend to be an NFL scout. They are privy to information I would never have access to about players.

That private information is usually the reason for highly touted players falling. Even guys like Mike Mayock didn't know until during the draft that there were issues with guys like Derrius Guice. You can't fault someone for projecting him higher based on ability.

You participate in the same exact activities I do on an annual basis. Somehow, you believe you are suddenly above the rest of us that do this. The only person full of shit, staylor, is you. Quit being a pretentious little bitch.

I'm not saying we're smarter than GMs, I'm saying the argument that "If fans knew so much better, why aren't they NFL scouts?" is a stupid and shitty argument and has been for years.

And no, I'm not saying Veach has ****ed up this entire draft class. But it's happened before in Chiefs history. It's happened to every single fanbase at least once in the past 20 years. It's still not an excuse when it does happen.
Very well said.

And you know these picks are good because why again? Because Veach picked them so they must be good? Isn't that the exact same thinking that you're mocking, only it's the other point of view?

In any case I hope Veach is right and they're all good. However, regarding Watt - I do trust my eyes and I've seen just about every Aggie game this kid has played in and IMO, he MUST have done something really spectacular at the combine because he is the Phillip Gaines of Safeties. Talent? Yes. But...(Plug in your most memorable Phillip Gaines moment here)

Whats the difference between Veach panicked and reached and he ****ed up the whole draft? Thats what youve been saying. I completely agree that you are entitled to your opinion and hate the 'you arent a scout argument'. However id argue that theres not a lot of evidence to suggest that was the case, nor that your view of one or two players means Veach doesnt know what he's doing. But then thats just my opinion.

I don't know anything about NFL scouting, but I can see it having similar traits to baseball scouting which for years was stuck in its old moronic ways detailed in moneyball (We shouldn't take that guy, he has an ugly girlfriend).

I can really imagine scouts being opposed to analytics like PFF because it devalues their "skill" and I can see how in general the process encourages scouts to try and stand out and "see something others have missed". I imagine getting lucky and banging the table for a little known guy who turns out to be a superstar is one of the better ways to advance in your career.

Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that scouts are actually shit at their job and not adding any value, I just don't know if we will ever find that out for sure.
