Nightfyre Off-season Number 2

This offseason is predicated on keeping Alex Smith for the next two to three (/cry) years. One thing is for certain - he will have ZERO excuses in 2015.

All figures are in '000s

Transactions:

Year Salary/SBon/Cap Hit

2016 5,000/4,000/9,000 (All gty’d)

Mike Devito - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 4,000
AJ Jenkins - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 1,337

Donnie Avery - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings 3,550
Joe Mays - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 3,000
Anthony Fasano - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 1,975
Frank Zombo - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 770
Donald Stephenson - Cut - 2015 Cap Savings: 685
Eric Berry - NFI/Settlement - 2015 Cap Savings 5,455

I think for Berry, we pay 0% of his contract salary and start a foundation for his treatment, to which the Chiefs contribute 5,500. This removes the salary cap component and gives us a tax deduction in the process.

RFAs/ERFAs
All current RFAs/ERFAs will be brought back at minimum salaries to compete for jobs in camp.

Summary of expected changes:

+5,000 Restructure Dwayne Bowe
+8,298 Restructure Tamba Hali

NFL Draft

TRADE: Chiefs trade down with Dallas Cowboys, picking up a second for a fourth: 1.18 and 4.19 for 1.27 and 2.28
The Cowboys target Melvin Gordon.

1.27 Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
Erving can literally play anywhere on the line. We start him at right tackle year 1 making Jeff Allen our utility backup lineman. Erving also provides left tackle insurance in the event Fisher does not make the leap to franchise tackle.

2.17 Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State
I honestly think Devin Smith makes it to the second round. There are just so many good receivers that one will drop. White, Cooper, Parker, DGB, Funchess, and Strong are all likely to go ahead of Devin Smith, which leads me to believe he will be available.

2.28 Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson
I think Anthony’s accolades have been sung from on high here enough. He needs some coaching, but I think DJ can get this kid spun up.

3.16 Ali Marpet, C, Hobart & William Smith
Marpet has the size and athleticism to play anywhere on the interior line, and may even have the length to get a look at tackle if he can develop his functional strength. His combine pumped his value, but he will make an excellent insurance policy in the event of injury and can push Fulton for the starting job in 2016, given some coaching. He also makes Allen totally expendable next year.

3.Comp Eric Rowe, FS, Utah
Some folks will say this is a reach, but I think the combine blew this kid up to the third or fourth round. Rowe is extremely athletic, is a solid tackler and has ball skills. He could probably play corner in Sutton’s press-man scheme, but we need a super athletic FS to provide support to the corners when they play press/man or get picked.

5.18 Justin Hardy, WR, East Carolina
There has been a lot of talk about the Chiefs being hot for Hardy. I suspect his combine performance hurt him quite a bit, but he is still one of the most productive college players. He is long with big, glue-like hands and is agile like a fox. I expect for him to push for some playing time inside.

5.Comp Taiwan Jones, ILB, Michigan State
Taiwan Jones is the quintessential thumper and will eventually be a tone-setter for the defense.

5.Comp Tyler Kroft, TE, Rutgers
Kroft will immediately contribute to the running game with his blocking and has some athleticism which, if properly coached up, could make him a nice secondary tight-end receiving threat for play-action situations.

6.17 Zack Wagenmann, OLB, Montana
Wagenmann is a big-time athlete who produced against inferior FCS competition. He has the measureables but may come as a project. He has future starter potential, though, and some insurance should Ford not work out.

7.16 Justin Coleman, CB, Tennessee
A straight-up nickel corner who will contribute to special teams right away.

7.Comp Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA
Hundley has an above average arm and mobility Reid can work with. He will be a developmental prospect. His size, hand size and arm strength all check blocks. Whether he can ever learn to read defenses and work progressions is going to be the question at hand.

QB: Smith/Murray/Hundley
HB: Charles/Davis/Thomas/Charcandrick
FB: Sherman
WR: Bowe/Maclin/Smith/Wilson/Hardy
LT: Fisher/Erving/Duvernay-Tardif
LG: Wisniewsky/Allen/Marpet
C: Hudson/Kush/Marpet
RG: Fulton/Allen/Marpet
RT: Erving/Allen/Duvernay-Tardif
TE: Kelce/Kroft/Harris

NT: Poe/Knighton
DE: Bailey/Vickerson/Walker/Howard/Catapano
OLB: Houston/Ford/Hali/Wagenmann
ILB: Johnson/Anthony/Johnson/Jones
CB: Smith/Gaines/Fleming/Cooper/Coleman
S: Abdullah/Rowe/Coleman/Commings

K: Santos
P: Colquitt

With the acquisition of Wisniewski, Hudson, and Erving, we have a solid core of a line for 4 years. Fulton will still have 3 years on his deal and Fisher has 2 years remaining. This year will be about setting a foundation for a new QB in 2016/2017. Hudson and Wisniewski are two smart lineman who will provide veteran guidance to the up-and-coming core.

Would be nice. I still don't feel that Maclin is leaving Philly. I think the only WR of the top 4 FA's that will potentially be on a new team this season is Cobb.

Condon will make sure Maclin sees free agency. And he has a history with KC. And Maclin's history with Reid makes me believe it will be a possibility.

Maclin wants to stay, the Eagles want him, and last I heard they weren’t significantly far apart.
The Eagles can simply tag him if they want to, if only just to buy time on a contract.

The WR franchise tag is 12.71 mill. There is no way, no how that the Eagles will tag him - and if they do, he should play under the tag. Condon knows this, and it is his job to absolutely ensure that he takes Maclin to Free Agency because that will get multiple bidders involved.

The Eagles have $27M in cap space and no one else to use it on. They could potentially not use it like last year but when the difference is only about $3M more than what the player is looking at in terms of a contract, not sure what makes it such a terrible idea, especially when you can easily cover the cost. Just look at how much Larry Fitzgerald just got and compare his last few years vs Maclin.

The Eagles tagged Vick to stay out of FA before signing him to a big contract. They also did the same with DeSean Jackson. I'm betting they do the same with Maclin.

Thanks for the input, jd. I just have to agree to disagree, man. My bet is Maclin sees free agency, but time will tell.

I like it but why would Wis sign that contract? Awful low number for that many years. 3 year 10 million would be a lot more realistic.

Reportedly, he was looking for a 3mil/year deal. I went just above that and provided essentially 12 mil in guarantees or 60% of the contract. Additionally, the Chiefs have 3.5+ million in cap space this year to play with if they want to sweeten the pot for him.

No. To tag Hudson would cost way too much.

Almost 13m

If Hudson doesn't want 6-7m then I think they need to let him walk.

I'm just saying it wouldn't make any sense to not get a deal done with Houston.
