Renovating a Kitchen. Looking for Advice.
Mrs. Buehler445 and I are buying a different house. It is really what we want in terms of size, layout, neighborhood, etc. The only drawback is there are no upper cabinets in the kitchen...WTF? Anyway, we made the decision to man up and put in a kitchen that we want.

Since I'm a home renovation n00b, I'd appreciate any advice, tips, or experiences the CP braintrust can provide.

In doing this, we are going to have to come up with,

Cabinets (obviously)

Countertop

Backsplash

Moving the sink I hate plumbing. But it shouldn't be too bad, the plumbing is in an unfinished portion of the basement

Flooring which I'm pretty comfortable with.

Most of the work will be hired, partially because I'm a noob. Partially because I'm busy as ****.

LOL. I guess it depends. They quoted 6-8k for my kitchen but I have a pretty big kitchen. Honestly I didn't look into it much cause I could do the formica myself for 200-300 dollars. So that was the route I went. Just wasn't cost effective to put in granite with the neighborhood I was in.

Nope. I am talking behind the counter on the wall, just the lower portion. They can be done with solid surfaces—not just formica. They can even be coved.

See the second pic. Very nicely nice. I see those glass tiles at shows without one and I wouldn't want that.

Colorado Cabinets has some nice options, too.

Make sure you put in sliding shelves in the lower cabinets and pantry. You lose some storage space but, it beats getting down on all 4's and trying to see what's in the back.

Yeah, after looking through some of the options out there, I'm definitely going to make at least some of them a priority.

Not going with some form of a stone counter would be dumb as ****. For all of the talk about the "maintenance" with granite, it's a snap. And worrying about "style" is also generally dumb as **** because everything is cyclical.

Get what you like and leave it at that.

It's owned by brothers out of Hutch, but they travel. I have had booths next to them at home shows and they are solid, good people that have been doing it for decades.

True. I remember when we first bought our house and made plans to finish the basement. We were quoted like $50K to do it how we wanted. We happened to have a friend who was a real estate agent and she warned us that, because our house was already above the average home value in the area, we wouldn't get a good ROI by finishing the basement.

Now if we thought we were going to live out our days there, then yes, it would probably be worth it. But we knew that mostly likely wouldn't be our final home.
