So I'm hopping a freighter to China...

Well, actually Vietnam. But I'll make a stop in China.

It just seemed like the thing to do. I'm in Oakland now waiting as they load cargo. I'm the only passenger on a 1,000 foot ship for the next 19 days.

Here's my ship: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/...:CMA_CGM_RHONE. I got whisked aboard before I could take an exterior photo.

Since I'm the only passenger, I get the owner's cabin on the top deck. Here are a few pictures of my cabin area. I also have the use of a lounge on another floor, and I can share the crew's gym.

So if anybody needs me, I won't be around for the next few weeks as I sail my private 1,000 foot yacht across the Pacific.

Since you're bringing a laptop you should bring some DVDs to play on it. I would suggest:
Captain Phillips

and

The Perfect Storm

This worries me a little, because I have no helicopter gunship support on my trip.

Why though?

That tells me what happens but why?

Tell me what it is and where its on a ship, so I can put some understanding into context. Post pics if you have to. I will let you teach me today—just not on gun safety.

A weather deck is an open spot on a ship that is exposed to the elements. There are safeguards in place but ships can move erratically. So it's easy to get caught up observing the wonders of nature that surround you and lose your footing and/or your grip. That means that you can fall overboard even if you are a seasoned (salty) veteran of ocean voyages. If you fall overboard you're only realistic hope of surviving is to be spotted by the crew. If you are alone at night that's probably not going to happen. The last time I went to sea, coincidentally right around where Rain Man is going, a 20+ year US NAVY veteran Chief Petty Officer was lost at sea at night from an aircraft carrier. His body was never found.

My wife's cousin was in the merchant Marines. He tells some very interesting stories. FYI, if you decide to jump off the deck to end it all it is considered good etiquette to leave your shoes on deck as an indicator of your intentions.

True. Don't waste everyone's time and get people upset for no reason.

The above deck and below deck crews are the two factions. When times are good the ribbing between the two is good natured, but if things are dicey, the disagreements can get real. Interesting dynamic.
