Shooting at Arrowhead- Chiefs player commits suicide

No details yet. Just came across on the news.

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Rather than waste a lot of time and drama disagreeing with you and derailing into a gun rights argument, I'll just point out that when a congresswoman was shot in the head by a mentally ill guy, nothing changed, and almost no one demanded a change in gun laws.

I used to see and hang out with Chiefs players in the late 80's and early 90's at various bars all over Kansas City, including strip clubs (where many were regulars).

But I never met or saw the type of drugged out drunkeness described in that article. Guys would have a few beers at most, not stumble around incoherently and be a train wreck.

Now, all of us back in the day witnessed Tommy Morrison's drunken buffoonery but not the week of or days before a fight.

It's just difficult to comprehend that he could fool dozens of people every single day. But I suppose it's possible.
Maybe he wasn't fooling them at all. Maybe some of his teammates knew he had problems but as long as he was doing his job they weren't going to mention it. Or maybe they spoke to him directly bypassing bringing management into the situation. Also, what if he had hidden substance abuse problems from the team but his girlfriend knew.

I'll be interested in hearing about the toxicology report. I bet that morning he was drunk off his ass or strung out on something. No one shoots a single person that many times without some serious rage or derangement going on.

I find it astonishing that the Chiefs don't have some type of EAP program for their employees. But even then, I'm not sure someone with severe problems would trust the confidentiality of a therapist supplied by the team. Not to mention the difficulty of getting them to go in the first place.

In the coming days, Belcher’s actions will be analyzed through the lens of concussions and head injuries. Who knows? Maybe brain damage triggered his violent overreaction to a fight with his girlfriend. What I believe is, if he didn’t possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

Million dollar question right here. Does owning a gun mean that people are just "fast forwarding" to the inevitable. Would Belchers GF have ended up dead eventually anyways, if he he hadn't owned a gun? By sheer force, knife, whatever.....? Basically owning a gun just makes it more convenient to kill when arguments escalate out of control.

On the other hand, millions of gun owners get in fights every day and never use them to settle an argument.......

I'm not going to be one of those nuts who says no, it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever, etc.

The answer to this question is probably yes. However, it should be pretty obvious by now, that we have collectively made the decision that this is an acceptable price to pay. Safety should be a consideration, but not the only consideration when deciding what limits to put on our freedoms. We cant metaphorically wrap the world and ourselves in bubble-wrap.

In our rope culture we should know people will hang themselves. If these ropes were not so readily available, today in Cleveland, a man would still be working at the Browns Stadium. Really, where will it end if we dont do something about ropes.
