Report: Undrafted Vols QB Tyler Bray signs with Chiefs
By Derek Harper | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after going undrafted Saturday, according to an ESPN report.
The No. 92 overall prospect by NFLDraftScout.com entering the draft and the No. 7-rated quarterback, Bray headed a star-laden group of underclassmen who went undrafted.

Projeced as a third-round prospect, Bray was one of several quarterbacks who slid dramatically during the three-day event due to a general lack of need for most of the 32 teams in the NFL. Florida State's EJ Manuel was the only quarterback selected in the first round, and former Heisman Trophy hopeful Matt Barkley fell all the way to the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round.

Bray left Tennessee following a record-breaking 2012 season that included 3,612 passing yards and 34 touchdowns against 12 interceptions with a 59.6 completion percentage. However, he appeared timid during his media session at the Scouting Combine. Failing to distinguish himself from the second-tier quarterback class, Bray was subject to a significant fall come the draft, and that's exactly what transpired.

It's a coup for the Chiefs, who were believed to be one of the few teams potentially interested in a quarterback entering the draft. They declined to select one with any of their eight draft picks and ended up as a great destination for Bray, who might well benefit from not being locked into a team that drafted him.
In Kansas City, he will have a chance to compete with five-year veteran Chase Daniel as the backup to starter Alex Smith. Daniel is 6-foot and has virtually no regular-season experience after backing up Drew Brees in New Orleans. Ricky Stanzi and Alex Tanney are also on the Chiefs' roster, neither of whom has played a regular-season down in the NFL.

If Bray was going to suffer through the indignity of not being drafted, he couldn't have landed in a better spot.

Ryan leaf was also a sociopath, had a short temper, and was a drug addict. Traits that are significantly harder to hide in this 24 hour, constantly socially connected world we now live in. We should be fine.

And he'd probably go undrafted in this era as well...

Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray has the measurables and the arm strength to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

In that sense, the Kansas City Chiefs signing him after the draft was a smart move.

There is still plenty for Bray to work on. His decision-making and accuracy need work. He also needs to improve in regards to identifying NFL-level plays. According to Michael Schottey of Bleacher Report, one NFL scout called Bray's whiteboard interview "the worst he'd seen."

But Bray also measures at 6'6", 230 pounds. He registered the NFL combine's best peak ball speed at 59 mph, per Dan Pompei of the National Football Post.

It's not a surprise that Bray went undrafted at Radio Music City Hall given his apparent lack of intangibles and football IQ, but he's most certainly worth a gamble after the draft.

In terms of production while he was at Tennessee, the reviews were mixed. He ended up passing for over 3,600 yards in his junior year while tossing 36 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He also ranked a respectable 25th in the nation in yards per pass attempt.

On the other hand, Bray was blessed with two incredibly athletic receivers in Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter (both were selected in the first 34 picks of the draft this year).

He also struggled against some top competition in the SEC, throwing a combined seven interceptions against Florida, Georgia and Alabama in 2012. South Carolina was the only top SEC team that he played well against last year.

While production isn't everything when evaluating NFL prospects, when you don't produce against top college competition, and back up doubts about your pocket presence, accuracy and decision-making in the process, that can raise red flags throughout the NFL.

Was this a good move for the Chiefs?

Overall, this a low-risk pick, and with the Chiefs recently signing veteran quarterback Alex Smith, it's not like they need Bray to come in and start right away. It's a good situation for the young signal-caller who will be able to learn under new Chiefs coach Andy Reid's wing.

If it doesn't work out for the Chiefs, they didn't have to risk much anyway. If it does work out, Kansas City finds a steal.

It's all about drafting (or not drafting) for value in the NFL. Bray was a worthy signing for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tyler Bray an interesting get for Chiefs

By Bill Williamson

After the Kansas City Chiefs saw the three other teams in the AFC West take a quarterback in the draft Saturday, they plucked one of the more interesting quarterbacks available in undrafted free agency.

ESPNBoston reports the Chiefs signed Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray. He was perhaps the most coveted undrafted free agent. Many scouts thought he’d be drafted in the mid rounds.

The Chiefs have starter Alex Smith, but Bray is an intriguing developmental prospect for coach Andy Reid. If all goes well, he could develop into a starter.

Bray has a big arm, and was probably the most physically gifted quarterback in the class. But he has questionable mechanics, was a poor decision-maker, and his leadership was called into question. The Chiefs won’t ask much of Bray for the short term, but if he can improve his deficiencies, there is potential there, and the Chiefs are taking no risk.

The Chiefs, who have not announced their draft class, also reportedly signed another interesting undrafted player in former UW-Milwaukee basketball player Demetrius Harris. He is being converted to a tight end. Harris received a lot of interest around the NFL, including from Oakland and San Diego. He is a long shot, but the transition has been made before, so it’s worth the Chiefs’ time to develop Harris. I would bet he’ll spend the 2013 season on the practice squad if he shows any promise at all.

In other AFC West notes:

ESPN’s John Clayton believes the Chargers are the top winners in the draft in the entire class. There is no doubt, the Chargers scored big with their first three picks, tackle D.J. Fluker, linebacker Manti Te’o and receiver Keenan Allen. However, ESPN’s Jeffri Chadiha isn’t sure Te’o will be a good fit in San Diego.

Former San Diego-turned-Denver pass-rusher Shaun Phillips feels he’s on the “good side” now. I’m sure that will please San Diego fans to hear.

After watching the video, its very impressive how quickly he gets rid of the ball. He does need some work on his mechanics. At times, his throwing motion also looks like he is trying to skip a rock across a pond. He also tends to lean his upper torso backwards during a throw when pressured. All correctable.

Tyler Bray The Main Blemish In Otherwise Successful NFL Draft For The SEC

Darren Heitner, Contributor
Covering the intersection of sports and money

Eleven quarterbacks were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft. Quarterback Tyler Bray was not one of them. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

In a 2013 NFL Draft where a total of sixty-three Southeastern Conference (SEC) players were selected by NFL teams, former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback, Tyler Bray, went undrafted. It was a fantastic three-day period for the SEC, which broke a modern NFL Draft record for number of players drafted from any one conference. The glaring exception being the fact that Tyler Bray had not been selected in any of the seven rounds.

Bray, a physically gifted quarterback who stands at 6’6 and has been weighed around 230 pounds, had an impressive college campaign at Tennessee, throwing for a total of 7,444 yards and amassing 69 touchdowns against SEC defenses largely considered the most stingy when it comes to allowing offenses to score. He declared for the NFL Draft based on his effective numbers and physical acumen, leaving Tennessee prior to his senior season. However, in December, Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports noted, “Scouts praise Bray’s stature, arm and his gunslinger mentality, although the latter, coupled with questions about his maturity, will also give other NFL personnel people plenty to ponder.”

Despite Feldman’s concern, which was echoed by others, NFLDraftScout.com ranked Bray as the seventh best available player at his position going into the 2013 NFL Draft. The site, largely respected for its thorough scouting information made available to the public, projected Bray to be a third round pick. Eleven quarterbacks ended up being taken in the Draft. Tyler Bray’s name was not called.

Bray, represented by Los Angeles-based agent Don Yee of Yee & Dubin, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent after the conclusion of the 2013 NFL Draft and will have the opportunity to make the team if he is able to show his effectiveness (with his arm and leadership skills) on the field. However, one must wonder what exactly went wrong and why Bray determined that it was in his best interest to forfeit his remaining student-athlete eligibility if he was going to go undrafted. Could he have possibly had any idea of his true Draft stock?

The NFL provides college underclassmen with an NFL Draft Advisory Board, comprised of various scouts, general managers and personnel directors, which intends to provide said underclassmen considering entering the NFL Draft with an unbiased opinion of where they are likely to be selected. Players can expect an analysis that tells them they are likely to be drafted (1) in the first round; (2) as high as the second round; (3) as high as the third round; (4) after the third round; or (5) in no round at all. It is an entirely free service that an underclassmen need only apply for, and it has no negative ramifications for an underclassmen’s continuing student-athlete eligibility.

It is likely that Bray filled out the application to receive his Draft grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board and that he was told he was likely to be selected as high as the third round. The opinion of the Board is confidential; unless Bray or his agent speaks on the record, there is no way of knowing whether Bray went through the process and/or what he was told. That said, even though the NFL Draft Advisory Board’s opinion should be respected, it is not guaranteed, and minds may change between the time that the opinion is handed out and the start of the NFL Draft.

A message has been left for Yee & Dubin to inform FORBES whether Bray submitted his name to the Board, and if so, what was the Board’s opinion. As of publication, the agency has yet to respond.
