Former KU track star Billy Mills opposed to Washington NFL team nickname

Count Kansas track legend Billy Mills among those speaking out against the use of the name “Redskin” by the NFL franchise in Washington, D.C.

Mills, a member of the Lakota Nation and a 1964 Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000 meters, is clear about his objection to the name, speaking this week to The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“If somebody said hi to me and then said, ‘Hey, how’s the Redskin doing,’ I think you would have to see a lack of sensitivity,” Mills told The Gazette. “It would offend me. The only time I’ve been referred to as a Redskin has been in derogatory ways.

“A Redskin has to do with the bounties placed on Native Americans. A bounty was paid if you could bring in the scalp, a Redskin. Where and to what point do we start accepting it as a badge of honor?”

“How can America allow this?” Mills continued.

The franchise’s use of the name has continued to come under fire in recent months. Washington owner Dan Snyder is vehemently opposed to a change, but in mid-June, the United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled the franchise’s trademark, saying that it was “disparaging to Native Americans.”

“There’s a tremendous fear in this country to the idea of change,” Mills said. “We retaliate. We withdraw. I see that fear of change in this issue of the mascots.”

Mills also dismisses that argument the name can honor Native American culture.

“That’s beginning to collapse,” Mills said. “The name will be changed. How soon? How many more legal battles? I don’t know.”

The Star’s policy is to not use the term “Redskins” unless it is the subject of a story.

His being reasonable, unfortunately, will do no good, sooner or later the name will be changed. Somebody is offended, that's all that matters.

I find the term jayhawks offensive given that it glorifies a group of vicious murderers who left a trail of blood through my ancestral home region.

I don't really, but if I were looking for things to be outraged about, why shouldn't I?

I think that is most of the reason behind a lot of these types of things. This is not the case with all, but a lot anymore.

Emmitt Smith sat down and thought about it really hard, and came up with the dumbest suggestion ever, unless of course, the Dallas Cowboys eventually change their name to the Dallas Shirts, in which case it would work quite well.

This is a couple of weeks old, so apologies if repost, but a search of "Emmitt" showed no hits in this thread:

Emmitt Smith has Redskins name change he thinks will work

If Daniel Snyder wants advice about his football team’s nickname, he can get it from all corners. There are those standing fast in his corner; there are those railing against him and his insistence on keeping the Washington Redskins team name as is.

There’s another opinion offered [by] Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back, Emmitt Smith. As heated as the rivalry between these two storied franchises is, Smith actually sympathizes with Snyder and has an idea about what steps he should take.

“I think it’s unfortunate because Daniel Snyder bought the Redskins because of the Redskins value and the Redskins brand,” Smith told Sporting News. “Now you take that from him, it’s gonna be very tough because he loses some of that value.

“But if he can just drop the Red and keep the Skins, I think that part would suffice. Drop the Red and keep the Skins, keep the Indian logo and keep it moving, make the adjustment. You don’t have to change the colors. People know them as the ‘Skins anyway. The brand has been completely established; don’t lose it all trying to fight the overall battle. Take the one thing that will make you successful and that part is the ‘Skins and no one can question that.”

Something says Smith could be wrong on that final point. It will be questioned, as will everything that has to do with this naming controversy, from now until who knows when.

Vocal supporters and detractors flank Snyder. From the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceling six registered trademarks—a decision that will be met head-on in the appeals process—to the three Virginia lawmakers forming the Redskins Pride Caucus in defense of the name, there is no sense of a clear, clean finish to the debate.

The Chiefs probably would have won a Super Bowl if the team name had been offensive to Jerry Markbreit. It's too bad they didn't do more research on this and find something that really horrified him.

NFL Referee Avoided Washington Games for Seven Seasons Because of Team’s Nickname
By Ben Mathis-Lilley

One of the NFL's most respected officials was allowed to stop working Washington games after 2006 because he felt the team's nickname was disrespectful, the Washington Post reports:

Told a search of game logs dating back as far as 1999, his fourth year in the league, revealed Carey had not worked a preseason or regular season home or away Washington game since the opening week of the 2006 season, he smiled coyly, like a man whose cover had finally been blown.

Pausing for eight full seconds, he finally spoke:

“The league respectfully honored my request not to officiate Washington,” Carey said. “It happened sometime after I refereed their playoff game in 2006, I think.”

Carey, who in 2008 became the first black man to work as the head referee in a Super Bowl, said he made the request to the league's referee scheduling supervisors and isn't sure if other NFL figures, including commissioner Roger Goodell, were aware of his stand. Carey will be working this season as an analyst for CBS Sports, whose chairman has said he will allow individual broadcasters to decide whether they want to use Washington's nickname.
