SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KGO) -- An American Airlines jet bound for Dallas makes an emergency landing at the San Francisco International Airport when it looked like the inside of the plane was coming apart at the seams in midair. A passenger caught a photo of the walls of the plane coming apart near the windows. Many of the passengers ABC7 News spoke to were feared the worst. There were 184 passengers on board the flight. The FAA is investigating the bizarre incident and it wants to know what caused the walls of the plane to buckle during takeoff. The American Airlines Boeing 757 was towed to a maintenance hangar at SFO after making an emergency landing. It's a flight passenger James Wilson will never forget. He told ABC7 news, "All of the sudden we heard this loud pop, pop, pop, pop, pop really loud and a ripping sound." Wilson heard the sounds just seconds after takeoff and thought the plane was breaking in two. He took a photo after part of the cabin wall on the sides and ceiling split apart near rows 14 and 15. You can even see exposed insulation near the window. "It was terrifying; we didn't know what was going on. We were all shouting for the flight crew, 'Come, look, the walls are caving in!" Wilson said. Flight attendants looked at the bucked walls and asked passengers if they could see cracks in the plane. "They kept asking. To the gal sitting in front of me, I said, 'Look in there, do you see daylight?'" Wilson said. After 45 minutes, the captain declared an emergency and told passengers he was returning to San Francisco. "I was scared, I really was, and I wasn't sure if we were going to make it, but a little prayer," passenger Yvonda Little said. A fire truck greeted the plane after a safe landing. American Airlines says the Dallas bound flight never lost cabin pressure, but they can't explain why the cabin walls popped. Some passengers were rebooked on other flights. Little says she's still trying to get back to Indianapolis. She hopes the next flight home will be less exciting |

Because the interior of the plane and the exterior are the same thing!

Meh. I've had this happen a few times. Anyone remember Vanguard Airlines? I swear that I saw part of the interior cabin held together with duct tape. It's not part of the pressure cabin.

My last flight from Atlanta to San Antonio a few weeks ago had a plane that was creaking and groaning more than made me comfortable.

I've never seen this one before but it's a beauty!
I'm not sure I wouldn't have had a heart attack when the plane looked like it was breaking apart. If I was a cool character I would have gone up to the hottest woman on the plane and say "Let's F*** so we can have fun before we die!"

Heh my brother had a much worse experience flying to Belize City a few years back on TACA Airlines (Take A Chance Airlines) They were flying over the ocean and the jet just lost power. They were at over 30K and all hell broke lose. I guess there was a sudden drop and they went into a steep decent. Drinks and passangers were flying around people were screaming and everyone thought "this is it." They managed to power it back up a couple thousand feet before impact and pull out of it.
I guess there was no announcement or explanation of any kind from the pilot. He was likely too busy cleaning out his pants.

I did have a United Airlines flight from Newark NJ to Tokyo back in 1995 or 1996 once hit severe turbulence about 2 hours before we arrived and people bounced all over during dinner service, food and drinks spilled all over and a few carts fell over. The plane was a mess when we disembarked. To have a 747 bounce around like a roller coaster at 35,000 feet can leave you a little shaken. I was on this flight at least 15 times and 1/2 the time we hit turbulence prior to arriving at Narita Airport in Tokyo. It's common from the winds coming from China across the mountains of Japan causing major ripples in the jet stream. I also had to land during a severe thunder and lighting storm on a domestic flight in Australia when on Ansett Airlines. We circled for nearly two hours hoping the storm would cease but we had to land when we ran low on fuel and the pilot did a military style corkscrew landing to get on the ground quickly. It took less than 5 minutes to descend about 15,000-20,000 feet like a spiraling lawn dart. The pilot was very helpful by explaining what was going to happen BEFORE the landing.

Yeah I flew them once myself after my brother had his brush with death experience and had decent luck. They even served full meals like airlines did 25 years. With that being said and given a choice, I fly either Delta or United down there at this point.
