They usually are, their owners let them get away with it because they weigh ten lbs and can't really do much damage. If someone rings your doorbell and a 5lb poodle foams at the mouth no big deal, German Shepherd or something else is a little more concerning.

The only real problem with pits is that they are the favored dog of the insecure wanna be tough guy.
I mean in my neighborhood I'd say that half of the dogs are pit bulls. I don't have a beef with the dog. They're not even in the top 10 most aggressive dogs. They're just commonly owned by low IQ and low class morons who view their dog as an extension of their penis. They just want to say "my dog can beat up your dog". |

I once watched a Yorkshire Terrier rip a finger wide open. Have you compared pit bulls bite and tooth strength to a yorky? I bet pound for pound the yorky gives a pit a run for its money. Why else does Cesaer the whisper not own a yorky?

The bite strength is measured in pounds per square inch, and nothing is even remotely close to a Pitbull.

But, I'm not sure the argument here is necessarily about jaw strength, but more about the persistence of the bite. It just seems that Pitbulls are easily agitated and when they get those jaws on you they damn near die before letting go. |

Their jaws are like a vice. They can clamp down twice as hard as any other breed. They shatter bones. I don't dislike pitbulls, but I'm weary of them because when agitated they are far more dangerous than other breeds of dog. The reality is that Pits have been bred for aggressiveness for generations and still are not, naturally, an aggressive dog. Border collies are far more aggressive naturally, but they simply can't do the damage that a pitbull can do. |

Supposed friendliness of the breed doesn't matter. Except at the edges, age of the animal doesn't matter. If you (or yours) piss off a dog enough, or trigger a response in other ways (running, rough play, etc..), it's on like Donkey Kong. |

Bullshit. I've had dogs that couldn't bust a biscuit. Dogs bite hard cause they want to. It's the bite and shake that make the type do so much damage.

One aspect of training an alpha dog I haven't seen brought up in this thread is the importance of socialization when they're young in the first year. That's of major importance to get them ready to be able to take for a walk in the park or in the woods where they're going to encounter others.
I have no experience with training a pit bull only because I love German Sheppard's and border collies and just don't have the time for much more unless I make it a job. As mean as it may sound when you're dealing with a German Sheppard, pitdbull or mastif or whatever that is one day going to be ~100lbs dog. Stick your knee in that ****ers chest when he's 50lbs look him in the eye and don't let him up until he knows who is boss. It's a lot easier than when he can take you and other dogs. Get them early. Socialization and early dominance. They aren't people that you can reason with later on when it's too late. |
