for folks in this thread - I picked up this hard back book at Urban Outfitters called "1001 video games you must play before you die".
It really is a great and comprehensive list, starting with the pong era, and going up through about 2012-2013ish. Book is mammoth, and has at least a page, sometimes two for each game (with glossy/color photos). Fun read. https://www.amazon.com/1001-Video-Ga.../dp/0789320908

because its not a fun game. it isn't popular even among retro-gamers. and it wasn't at all influential on subsequent game design.
I chose robotron (1982) as my number 1 GOAT because the control scheme is used by every FPS game and every twin stick shooter game on consoles.

So, every now and again I'll either mention or go through the plethora of games I own and remember how much I loved something when it first came out. Then I'll play it again and su to myself, "shit, this isn't as good as I remembered."
That isn't the case for a handful of games. One of the good ones I'm playing now is AC Black Flag. It was quite creative with the ship combat and the graphics still hold up. I have to say that the best game I've replayed recently that still holds up is The Last of Us. Probably the best story-driven game ever made. It's so perfect with its storyline, timing and the game makes you actually care a lot about all of the characters. What a ride. |

As for the Last of Us that's why it's number one. When you think of a perfect game that's it. Just an awesome job by Naughty Dog.

How are the best being defined? Influential? Ground breaking? Go by franchise? Longevity? Nostalgia? Repeat playability? Great multiplayer option? (thats what makes games most fun for me) Combination of all of the above required?

Those games are like good books, I could almost play through them once a year. And I spent an entire year only playing Civ 4 with Rise of Mankind mod, so yeah..... Shame I didn't have it through steam then, my hours would have been insane. (1100 hours in Civ 5 I don't think would come close to comparing.) /I did play WoW for like 5 years, so I don't shy away from multiplayer //Just old enough to remember multiplayer being 4 guys staring a screen yelling "Stop watching my guy you cheater!" ///wasted my freshman year of college playing Halo against the Dorm. First experience with high speed internet. It was glorious. ///First multiplayer experience was the original command and conquer over a dial up. Good times.

There are a TON of Super Nintendo classics I could rattle off, but one takes the cake: Secret of Mana
Amazing soundtrack. Loved the ambiance it created when traversing through temples and other lands. I would rent that every single time we went to the video store, no questions asked. |

Hmmm.... ill just name a few, alot are older games.
Mario Kart 8 (probably the best game i ever played) Mike Tyson's Punch out. Super Tecmo Bowl. Legend of Zelda Super Metroid NFL2K5/APF2K8 Ill just bunch them in. The online play against legit good players was probably the most fun i had in an online game. Everquest Im sure there are a few more here and there. |
