Mock (11/25)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs go 10-6 and miss the playoffs. All staff is retained.

2. S Eric Berry retires.

3. OLB Justin Houston is franchised.

4. OLB Tamba Hali is extended 3 years, $22m ($10m guaranteed).

5. The Chiefs re-sign C Rodney Hudson 4 years, $20m ($6m guaranteed), DE Kevin Vickerson 2 years, $4m, S Ron Parker 3 years, $6m ($500k guaranteed).

6. The Chiefs cut: QB Chase Daniel, WR Donnie Avery, WR AJ Jenkins, WR Jason Avant, TE Anthony Fasano, DE Mike DeVito, ILB Derrick Johnson, CB Marcus Cooper

7. OLB Josh Martin is tendered.

8. The following players walk in free agency: RB Joe McKnight, WR Junior Hemingway, WR Frankie Hammond, TE Demetrius Harris, OT Ryan Harris, OG Jeff Linkenbach, OG Mike McGlynn, CB Chris Owens, S Kelcie McCray

9. The Chiefs re-sign the following players for minimal deals: ILB Josh Mauga, S Kurt Coleman, LS Thomas Gafford

10. The Chiefs sign the following free agents: WR Jermaine Kearse (Seahawks) 3 years, $9m ($2m guaranteed), TE Lance Kendricks (Rams) 2 years, $5m.

11. Compensatory picks: 3rd, 5th, 5th, 7th

On with the show:

1.20. WR DeVante Parker, Louisville

The Chiefs had the worst WR corps in the NFL.

2.52. WR Ty Montgomery, Stanford

The Chiefs. Had the worst. WR corps. In the NFL.

3.84. OT Ereck Flowers, Miami

The Chiefs need a bookend tackle for the future.

3.98. RB Todd Gurley, Georgia

Jamaal Charles has one year left of high production. This is a strong contingency plan.

4.120. FS Jamal Golden, Georgia Tech

Great athlete, still learning the position.

5.160. ILB AJ Johnson, Tennessee

The Chiefs brought Mays, JMJ, and Mauga back, but more talent is needed at ILB?

5.174. CB Erik Rowe, Utah

If there's anything Utah does, it's churn out huge corners.

5.176. NT Josh Tupou, Colorado

A huge body, and an even bigger project.

6.196. CB Deshazar Everette, Texas A&M

A more slight CB who can grow to play in the slot.

7.235. K Michael Hunnicut, Oklahoma

Anybody feel good about Santos lining up for a 45-yarder in December? Me neither.

7.254. FS Dechane Duvante, Northern Illinois

Hails from the same program that produced Jimmie Ward, and is 6'2" to boot.

We have nine offensive linemen, ten if you count injured guard Jeff Allen.
Ryan Harris, our starting RT, and Rodney Hudson, our starting center are both free agents after the season. So is Jeff Linkenback. After our next season Allen and Stephenson are free agents.

So the question is what kind of o-line do you want? Do you want to cobble a bunch of spare parts together next to Fisher and Hudson, or do you want to actually build something. In the short term we are not bad at the position. Allen and Fulton are legitimate guards. Fulton should only improve from his rookie year. Having Allen and Stephenson back next season provides excellent depth and are talented enough to start, but we have a 3-4 year window, and they only help us for next season. Thus we need to invest in the o-line in this years draft.

I’m not advocating for a 1st or 2nd round pick, we need WR and ILB badly, but we can’t wait until the 5th and 6th round to address this area. It’s too important.

McGlynn, who is starting is also a free agent, but to call either him or Allen "legitimate" is laughable in my opinion (and yes I know you were only speaking on Allen). McGlynn and Allen are two of the worst guards in the entire NFL. Allen should be cut. McGlynn and Linkenbach should be allowed to walk. The most concerning play on the O-line to me has been at guard. I expect occasional pressure from the edge, it happens, but when 4 of 5 positions allow pressure, it's never good. I think fortifying the guard play will help keep pressure to the outside where it belongs.

The Chiefs need to invest in the O-line. If guys such as James Carpenter or Mike Iupati come available, they need to get them guys. I know it isn't likely, but at least 1 good one leaks out every year. They need to hit the draft with the premise that they need another weapon on the outside at WR and they need to fix the offensive line. If that doesn't happen, I'm going to be very concerned.

The Chiefs have high hopes for LDT, too.

Am I the only loser who thinks Marcus Cooper is just having a setback? He plays the ball in downfield coverage better than any CB currently on this team. You can't teach turning your head like that to look for the ball instead of just messing with the path of the receiver as best as you can without getting flagged for it.

He's in a slump year, but if he's learning, one has to think that he will see a tremendous amount of progress this coming offseason.

I don't know if he will make that jump or not, but at this point I'm not sure that the one game of Fleming that we saw is enough to crown him the superior CB.

No, I'm with you. I think Cooper has a chance to have a nice career. Also, it seems to me that every CB and safety that's worked with HOFer Emmitt Thomas has steadily improved over the course of their career.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Dorsey take a CB in the 4th or 5th that fits his vision, meaning 6'0 or taller, long arms, 200 pounds or more, etc to develop.
