I would buy a 2002-2005 BMW M3 with about 70K miles. These can be had for around $12-$15. They were around $60k new. You could drive it for 8 years and flip it for $7-9. So..you get a race engineered street car for about $80 a month + maintenance. The people who own these are usually very anal about keeping the cars in top shape.

I know what I'd do - but perhaps I shouldn't chime-in, as it's not the most practical.

Bought a 2011 Optima EX(?) with 22k miles on it for the wife last year. It's a great car. This one has lot of options, too (leather heated/cooled seats, moon roof, bluetooth, garage door opener on the mirror). Good gas mileage, as well (24 city/up to 35 on the highway depending on variables like how fast I drive). So far, so good. Put about 16k on it the first year and it's still going strong.

Don't feel bad. My first car wasn't much better. 82 Chevy Monza (pic may be an 80, Hell, I don't know). That thing was always breaking down.

My 2nd car was an 80 Chevy Chevette. It wasn't nearly as nice looking as the one in this pic. But it was a good, reliable little beater. Paid $100 in 1990. Never had to work on it in the 3 or 4 years that I owned it.

My dad loved Chevettes. He had at least three, including a diesel one that was gutless as hell but got 54+ mpg. They were all very reliable.
