LNBS: Can Alex Smith be "Fixed"?

Part of me wants to think so.

We saw flashes in 2013 of him testing defenses downfield and being a lot more than a game manager.

Then his OL got severely downgraded through 3 big losses in free agency (all 3 got overpaid) and his 2 guards weren't even nfl quality, let alone starter quality.

His receivers needed a major upgrade last offseason (they were an obvious team weakness) and other than adding Jason Avant late in the year and developing a promising rookie in Albert Wilson...not a whole lot was done to help provide Alex Smith with adequate weapons. Losing Avery to injury further weakened an already subpar unit.

Here's my question:

If they improve the OL and receivers...will we see Alex Smith come out of his shell again (like we saw flashes of in the second half of 2013)?

If he does, how far can this team go if the defense plays like it has and Dee Ford steps into Hali's shoes adequately?

Sure, sure.

It just wasn't much of a success. It was Alex being barely competent in a game the defense won. He had good timing, though.

IMO FA OL have gotten too expensive. Same goes with WRs.

I can't see spending 4 million a year for a guard unless he is otherworldly and spending 8 per year for a WR is just as silly.

This draft has a lot of talent at those positions and the best bang for the buck is to use the draft for those spots.

DAT's downfield blocking sealed the deal.

He was completely underused this past season, as was Wilson, which is why I no longer trust Reid and his merry band of offensive retreads.

They all stole a paycheck in 2014 and laughed all the way to the bank.

If they have to spend 4 mil per for a guard, do it and be done with it. Just fix it.

Same with the WR spot.

With Bowe, Hali, Berry coming off the books, they'll have money. Fasano, Devito, the same.

Exactly.

That's why it's imperative that they upgrade the WRs and OL significantly if they are going to give this plan of winning with Alex a real chance.

Can't give the guy that deal and then not relentlessly try to put the pieces around him that help him have every opportunity to have continued success.

Wasn't Wilson hurt or that was revealed after the year?

With the OL being what it was (fault that wherever) the fact that they were able to do what they were on offense surprised me.

IIRC DAT was hurt

Maybe both of them were...also, the WCO especially Reid's version has a shit ton of plays to learn and it's very rare for rookie receivers to step right in to any WCO and produce.

The fact Wilson did towards the end was very promising.
