Fugitive Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been captured six months after a daring prison escape last July through a mile-long tunnel, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced Friday on his Twitter account. A federal law enforcement source at the DEA confirmed the capture to Fox News, saying it is "a great day for the good guys."

Fox News is told the U.S. will request that Chapo be extradited to the U.S. to face federal charges.

Guzman was apprehended after a shootout with Mexican marines in the city of Los Mochis, in his home state of Sinaloa, an official told The Associated Press. Marines reportedly seized two armored vehicles, eight rifles, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Photos of the arms seized suggested that Guzman and his associates had a fearsome arsenal at the non-descript white house in which he was hiding.

Two of the rifles seized were .50-caliber sniper guns, capable of penetrating most bullet-proof vests and cars. The grenade launcher was found loaded, with an extra round nearby. And an assault rifle had a .40 mm grenade launcher, and at least one grenade.

Five people were killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the raid.

Pena Nieto wrote in his Twitter account: "mission accomplished: we have him."

He'd better escape sooner than he did last time...

The Mexican government is preparing to meet the United States’ request to extradite the recently re-captured Mexican drug kingpin known as “El Chapo,” according to a report.

Mexican officials could fulfill the extradition request for Joaquin Guzman as early as mid-year, according to Reuters.
U.S. officials have sought to bring the drug lord within its borders to prevent him from again escaping from a Mexican prison.

Guzman escaped from prison in July of last year when he tunneled his way out of a maximum security prison near Mexico City. There was a manhunt for him since summer, culminating in his capture this week.

“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Lorea has been detained,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted in Spanish on Friday.

Guzman is worth an estimated $1 billion.

Mexican authorities revealed Friday that Guzman's desire to have a blockbuster movie made about his life helped lead to his capture.

Guzman had been in contact with actors and producers. The communication helped law enforcement track him down.

Guzman will be taken back to the same Altiplano prison that he escaped in July, authorities said.

As early as mid year !

It only took them 6 months to dig that whole tunnel last time. This time all they have to do is figure which room he's in and angle over a little from the end of the existing tunnel.

Should be outta there in 48 hours.
