Nah, my problem is that it's too rocky here. There isn't enough topsoil in some spots, so the grass suffers in extreme heat because there's not enough moisture holding dirt for the roots to dig deep for.

You could add vermiculite or perlite to your soil. Same stuff you put in potted plants to retain moisture. Also add humate to the soil. That gets oxygen producing bacteria in the soil to activate and stimulate the roots to grow.
