I understand what you're saying, but having one of the best trios at corner in the NFL is hard to pass up. I don't think we are far away, and being even better in the secondary next year alone could be enough. |

We'd like you to be back, but honestly, it takes someone who isn't a brittle puss to be worth the investment, I'll just leave it at that.

I think it goes two ways.
A) they like the secondary and keep it all in tact B) they somehow determine they don't like the secondary and don't want to pay that money to keep some guys and shake things up by drafting and spending on other guys to come in and play safety or corner. It's really how much they feel Smith, Berry, Abdullah, Branch is worth. I have a feeling Parker, Peters and Gaines will be playing with some new faces back there next season. |

I wouldn't mind having Peters, Lane, Gaines, Nelson a 3rd/4th rd pick.

And a franchise quarterback while you're at it! Amiright?!
Getting Marcus Peters is one of those things that even a really good franchise still only manages every 5 years or so. Building an offseason around the presumption that we're just gonna get another pro-bowl rookie CB is probably a really bad idea. {Please note for the record that my sarcasm meter may be broken}

Should we be worried about potential future back problems for Poe?

Its not a choice between keeping Berry and DJ or Sean Smith.
Its more like pay Howard or Smith. I'll take Smith in a heartbeat. |

If they could pay Sean 9-10 mil per yr for 2 years, then easy call and great.. but he's going to be expecting a 5-6 yr deal accompanied with a shit ton of guaranteed dollars later in the contract years. That will be very detrimental to the team if they want to move on in a couple of years. The first years are not a real concern.. it's beyond that that is.. which makes this tough.

Maxwell got his 6 yr deal with a 10.5 million AAV. He got $22 million in money that is essentially guaranteed over the first 2 years of the deal. And the Eagles can still easily escape after 2 years with cap hits in the first two years averaging only $9.2 million and nominal dead money in year 3. That's almost certainly the kind of deal he'll get and it's one the Chiefs could manage. Nobody's going to guarantee a 29 yr old corner $10 million/season for the next 4 seasons. Nobody's going to give him a $20 million signing bonus or guaranteed salary in 2018. What he's going to ask for and what he'll eventually get are two very different animals. Ultimately I'm thinking the most likely outcome remains fairly quick/easy resolutions with Berry and DJ and Smith gets tagged. The Chiefs will obviously allow him to explore the market at that point and then he'll come to the table to discuss a longer term solution. They'll end up with a deal that ends up similar to Maxwell's with perhaps a 5% increase due to multiple years of solid performance and an increased cap, offset somewhat by the lost leverage of having the tag affixed. Maybe the 3rd year has a little more money in it than Maxwell's does, but I don't see it as a given.

Strong and very encouraging points, DJLN. If he will take such a contract, then great.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/...ed/cornerback/ There are 3 guys that are approaching the rarified air you're talking about - Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis. Peterson signed his immediately after his 3rd season and thus his age 23 season. Richard Sherman was the same thing and signed his for his age 25 season. Both of those guys are distinguishable from Smith in that they were so young when they signed that guaranteeing the entire amount made some sense - they're probably going to play out the entire deal and locking them for more guaranteed money also meant more SB that could reduce the cap numbers early while potentially paying dividends late as the cap went up. Moreover, they're both simply better players than Smith is. Revis is a different animal in that his was signed for his age 29 season, like Smith's would be. But he was also seen as arguably the best CB of his generation and unlike Smith, he's an insane athlete who won't be completely ineffective after he loses a step. Smith can look for that kind of money, but he won't get it. There's an enormous drop in guaranteed dollars after those 3 guys - from Revis's $39 million all the way down to Carr's $26.5. Even Carr's shouldn't count because his was done out of desperation after the Cowboys desperately needed to move space to stay under the cap after the NFL penalties. They converted some of his base to bonus to save the cap 3 years ago and now they're paying for it. If I'm a betting man, I'd say that Smith ends up with a contract that looks a lot like the first 'true' contract in that next tier and a fair comparable: Talib. He'll end up in that second tier of high-dollar CBs that are good but aren't franchise players. Talib's deal shouldn't be completely cost prohibitive for Smith but long-term it may still not be a good one to have. If nothing else, saving money in 2016 by putting it towards a lower cost option could then be used as roll-over for Kelce/Poe when they look to re-sign.
