Floyd Mayweather Jr.Will Train With Tyron Woodley For A Possible UFC Debut

McGregor v Mayweather II? Damn.

Per the Hollywood Beatdown, a TMZ show, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is set to begin training former pound-for-pound boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a possible debut in the UFC.

Woodley talks about his time discussing the concept with Mayweather and the prospects of one or "a few" fights for the latter in the Octagon in the video below:

Mayweather took on UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match in August 2017 and that's a fight Woodley identified. Mayweather and McGregor have teased a potential rematch in the UFC, but nothing beyond talk has taken place up to this point. Mayweather has yet to apply for an MMA license, but this is perhaps the first real evidence that Money is at least seriously considering the concept.

The fight would be the biggest combat sports event of the year, as was the boxing match with McGregor in 2017. Woodley warns against taking the concept lightly.

“You all think it’s a joke, but think about this: Floyd Mayweather is one of the best strikers of all time," Woodley said. "How many guys in the UFC can’t wrestle, can’t grapple, they consider themselves a stand-up fighter. If they have to stand across from one of the greatest strikers ever, they gonna be in a world of smoke. We’re already getting it set up.”

Woodley believes Mayweather would need at last three months to prepare, but assures us this is a serious deal. We will see. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

I train BJJ. You absolutely pick up a ton of stuff in six months.

You also will lose - EVERY TIME - to anyone who has been training for a few years. There is no meritocracy like grappling, because there is no puncher's chance.

A three-stripe white belt will beat the shit out of a no-stripe guy. Even college wrestlers famously struggle.

A three-stripe white belt will get destroyed in seconds against a salty blue belt, let alone the UFC dudes who are black belts.

I train BJJ as well. My point is that 6 months of experience won't make you an expert, but you can gain enough knowledge to become somewhat competent. A person training with a high level trainer every day can improve exponentially. MMA is also different than straight grappling. Throw in strikes and it can negate some of the grappling prowess of the opponent. A grappling tournament of course would be completely different, but this wouldn't be the first guy with no grappling background come into MMA and compete. Of course he'd get destroyed by McGregor, but it's not out of the realm of possibility for him to be competitive with a lower ranked fighter.

So you think being allowed to elbow the face while in your guard makes it harder for high level guys? Why don’t you throw a punch at your professor while rolling and see if things get easier or harder from there.

Your entire argument is predicated on the idea that the other guy hasn’t been training for six YEARS multiple times a day with high level instructors.

But shit - eliminate grappling. Just throwing kicks and elbows and knees is an entire other animal, and defending those techniques requires a shit ton of repetitions and practice. He’s so behind the curve it’s ludicrous. If he wanted to start at the lowest rungs of MMA he’d probably be okay. But my god, any contender or even ascending dude with a well rounded game is going to obliterate him, and six months of training won’t do shit. We’ve seen this movie before.
