Sean Mannion....

He's my pick this year.

Bryce Petty underwhelmed me this season so I'm off that bandwagon.

This guy should be there in the 3rd....oh dros to the 4th, we need to snag him.

Sac, spin that shit!

Frank Cooney recently dropped him to the 5th round on his ratings index. If he's there that late, no-brainer in my opinion

Quote:
Mannion sports an NFL-caliber frame, has the arm to make every throw and is a classic drop-back passer with limited mobility. When he feels secure in the pocket and has the time to step into his throws correctly, Mannion's touch on intermediate and vertical passes is as impressive as any quarterback in the country. He lofts the ball with perfect trajectory over the shoulder of his receivers and allows them to go get it, demonstrating pinpoint accuracy to lead his target away from defenders and has an easy, natural throwing motion and he's well-versed in coach Mike Riley's pro-style offense, which asks him to take snaps from under center as well as from the gun. Reportedly given a third round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee after a record-breaking junior season, Mannion elected to return to Corvalis for a final year of college football.

Mannion's production (and coach Mike Riley's track record) speak for themselves. He threw for a Pac-12 record 4,662 passing yards last season, including a school record 37 touchdowns. He's entering his fourth season as the starter and is a three-time team captain.
Quote:
"He might be the most pro-ready of the senior quarterbacks. Part of it is just the fact that he is playing in a pro-style system," Brooks said. "His arm, he can make all the throws. He really understands how to get through his progressions from his primary, to his secondary, to his third read. Because he's played under (Oregon State head coach) Mike Riley, at the next level, the verbage and all the things that come that give some quarterbacks problems, he should be able to understand that."
Quote:
Mannion has a lot of skills that NFL teams are looking for in a starting quarterback. He has a strong arm that can make all the throws for the NFL. Mannion can push the ball vertically and drive the ball on deep outs to the sideline.

On top of his good height, Mannion has field vision and a nice basis for plus field vision as a pro. All college quarterbacks have to get better at scanning the field and working through their progressions for the NFL, but Mannion has a better starting point than most. He runs a pro-style offense at Oregon State and will enter the NFL with a lot of starting experience.

Forgive me if this is a naive question, but if Manion has everything NFL teams are looking for in an NFL QB then why isn't he going in the 1st round? Tall, big, good arm, great touch, records speak for themselves... ?

He's no different than what you hope for from guys like Aaron Murray.

He's just the next in the long line of middle round prospects at QB Chiefs fans drool for in hopes that they make it like current NFL QBs because it's all we have. This ownership simply does not draft the top tier QBs.

He has the tools you look for in a prototypical QB, but he just had is arguably worst season of his college career and is still suspect on the fundamentals and they break down the more he is pressured. One thing that stood out to me in one of his films on youtube against Utah from last year is that he throws high A LOT. If it weren't for his 2013 season with Brandin Cooks, you probably wouldnt even know his name or that he existed.

Agree with jd.. when he gets any pressure on him he goes backwards and throws off his back foot, making for some shitty throws that will be picked regularly in the NFL. He does some good things. I think he goes 3rd round and gets developed. He'd be great for a team with an aging starter like New England, New Orleans, Dallas, and San Diego. Or he'd be great for a team like KC that isn't likely going to spend a round 1 pick on a QB when they essentially have Smith for the next two years at minimum, but seriously need to look to developing a starter in the meantime.

That picture is from 2012, when Mannion missed 3 games mid-season with a knee injury. He hasn't worn a brace since, afaik.

What do you think of Mannion as an OSU fan? From the games that I've watched.....I think he can be decent. He's at the worst a good backup QB.

It was tough to get much from this season since the Beavers were so dysfunctional. The o-line was abysmal due to a ton of injuries and inexperience. All of the receivers were inexperienced and had a lot of trouble getting open. Often, if they did get open, they would flat drop it. Riley also didn't do him any favors as he didn't even try to establish a ground game until late in the season and frequently just kept dropping Mannion into 5-7 step drops to find something open deep. Mannion was frequently under pressure before he even finished his drop.

When he did get time, he made some beautiful deep throws. He's basically the anti-Alex Smith in that regard. If Al Davis was still alive, he would have loved Mannion as he would fit that old Raiders vertical game perfectly.

The thing that makes me a little hesitant is that I wanted to see him elevate the people around him and never really saw that though he's a good guy and, by all accounts, a good leader. I think he's very similar to Matt Ryan and that's probably his ceiling.

I wouldn't have a problem with the Chiefs drafting him and letting him sit for a couple of years. He is physically similar to Foles, who did okay in a Reid system. However, he would be a great fit for New Orleans and that style of play (not to mention being reunited with Cooks).

Forgot to mention - on the elevating the people around him part - I don't know how much leeway he had from Riley to improvise. Riley played a lot of mind games in 2013, not naming a starter until right before the season and jerking Mannion around, even though he was clearly our most talented QB. Mannion also wasn't going to be able to improvise much because our WRs were so clueless.

He did have some nice comebacks last year, particularly against Utah and Oregon (defense gave up that one) so he can do it. It just wasn't an all the time thing.
