Late night bullshit: drafting Geno now? Almost as big a coup as getting Montana in 93

Andy Reid has long been capable of thinking outside the box, and his track record backs that up. But acquiring Alex Smith for two 2nds for the sole purpose of giving the #1 overall guy time to develop would be among the most ambitious ideas he's ever had.

Nonetheless, I believe the Chiefs could be shifting in that direction. They've clung to WR Dwayne Bowe, they've tagged LT Branden Albert, they're on the verge of signing CB Sean Smith to start across from Flowers, and they have reached out to DE/DT Chris Canty (and in my hypothetical, as we've all long believed, Poe's talents might be better suited at DE anyway).

So it becomes official, then: unless the Chiefs do not actually find a single starting-caliber DE, they are simply not drafting to plug a hole with the #1 overall pick. Therefore, they can simply make the pick that helps them the most in the long run -- because if there is a single pick in the NFL Draft that should be made with the long run exclusively in mind, it's the first overall.

HC Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey talked down the QBs in this draft for weeks ever since they were ushered in by team owner Clark Hunt. But that was before the Combine, which had to have been a game changer. New WRs coach David Culley was on the turf at the RCA Dome as he asked all the QBs to throw very specific passes, one after another, to the WRs he was observing. And what was supposed to be a drill to determine WR talent actually determined the QB position once and for all. Quick outs, deep post runs, back shoulder bombs... All of the QBs had some good throws, most of them had off throws, and a good number of them were just terrible. Only one QB really separated himself with Croyle-esque darts on the short throws and beautiful Rodgers-esque accuracy on the deep balls.

Every pass. "Good throw!" "Great throw!" "Now that's a pass!" With a Chiefs coach literally five feet from him, Geno hit every single pass he was asked to deliver, on rhythm. Is there any doubt Culley raved to Reid when they convened later that afternoon? It had to immediately make them reassess.

They had long known this guy was not a world beater at West Virginia. He was a machine some games but lacked the drive to will his team to victories in other games. And West Virginia's coaching staff is said to be one of the least friendly and hospitable to NFL personnel in terms of sharing in formation. But with no filter between them and Geno, they saw his tools -- he was athletic, healthy, good natured, strong, and lest there be any doubt: one hell of a passer.

While they weren't sure that this guy is the future of the Chiefs, they became more willing than ever to find out. They made an incredibly aggressive move to lock down Alex Smith so Geno could ostensibly feel zero pressure as the Chiefs staff begins to groom him, all the while Alex Smith keeps the Chiefs competitive and helps Geno's apparent need to better absorb coaching (thanks, Mariucci). They made sure that any Chiefs QB for the next five years has the best WR in team history to throw to, and locked down Albert for the year, and hopefully for years beyond. Meanwhile, they made aggressive, potentially illegal moves to fill the teams neediest positions at CB and DE.

In short, Andy Reid came to Kansas City because he knew the talent was already amazing, save for one shitty exception at the team's most important position, and he used the best leverage he had at his disposal to fix it in the short and long term.

Should Andy Reid land this pick, he will perhaps have landed the team's biggest coup since Carl Peterson traded for Joe Montana in 1993.

I much rather have Tavon Austin.
I like Austin. But I have concerns he can play a full 16 game season due to his size.

Bad teams need QBs every year. I'm not saying that it's impossible to think of a team making a trade for the spot, but Hootie's acting as if there's not a doubt about it.

To me, this issue is this: The Bills, Cardinals, Raiders, Jets and Browns have veteran starting QB's on their roster. Most of those teams have other glaring needs.

Now, does one of those teams fall in love with Barkley or Smith so much that they're willing to avoid filling those holes?

That's the big question.

Tavon Austin in the NFL will be used in the slot.

We need a bigger body opposite of Bowe. Im thinking Brian Hartline. Youe could still have the killer Bs with Brian bowe and baldwin. Move Baldwin to TE.

No not a sure thing but it's a QB starved league and the other guys in this draft aren't NFL starters without alot of work and still they may not be. I think there's a decent chance someone moves up to #1 for Geno. I'd be glad to trade with the NFC teams. AFC teams have to pay a premium.

I mean, the QB position is the one position you, AT THE VERY LEAST, need to win games. You can have the greatest team in the NFL and if you don't have a QB odds won't be on your side to be a consistent winner year in and year out in the NFL. You need that stability at the QB position.

I'll 100% back Andy Reid if he looks at this draft and doesn't see any real franchise players to take at #1 and decides he'll take the best QB prospect in his eyes and then develop him with his coaching staff while Alex Smith takes the snaps for the first year (or even two).

If that is his master plan I props him for his creativity.

I just don't think it's realistic. I lambasted Hamas in 2009 for, as I put it, 'ruining the integrity of the mock draft' after he took Sanchez #3 overall for the Chiefs when we all knew that was not a possibility after the Chiefs traded their 2nd for Cassel...

so this new wave of optimism that has re-sprouted about Geno going #1 is just going to lead to another massive board meltdown.

People just need to get over it (I will agree with Dane there). I'm not happy about the state of our QB position with Alex Smith. I've said I think he's somewhere between Dilfer and Green but that doesn't really give me hope we can build a team like New England (and I'm not talking about dynasty NE, I'm talking about the last 9 years NE where they were always Super Bowl contenders...that's what I want KC to build...not just win 1 Super Bowl in a fluke year like Baltimore did this year...I want to be in the mix year in and year out).

I am, however, really happy about what they did today. They took care of our own and made them lifelong Chiefs. Or at least took a step in that direction. That's a good sign.

So right now...I'm hoping they can recoup what they gave for Alex Smith by trading down and then I'll be on board. SOC made a statement about not "demanding certain players"...so if Reid doesn't like Geno he doesn't like Geno. He took the unpopular pick in McNabb once upon a time when everyone thought it would be Ricky Williams without a doubt and it worked out. If he doesn't see it, who are we not to trust him?

This has been my argument for the longest time. We're not going to get every player we want every single time whether it's the draft or free agency. That's ridiculous. Literally, a SMALL percentage of draft-ites have Geno as the #1 pick/#1 prospect. Most of them are on this board. I know they are all "stupid", but to pretend that doesn't mean something is ignorant. It sucks we got the #1 in the year their was no clear cut #1 QB...but we're the Chiefs, it happens to us all the time.

At this point, if we can trade down and grab a skill player mid first and recover AT LEAST what we gave for Alex Smith I think we'll be HUGE winners.

Only huge winners if parlaying those picks back into getting a QB of the future and legit starters.
