Car guys: Leaking power steering
I know next to jack about fixing cars, so I'm at the mercy of mechanics when something breaks. I never know if I'm being taken advantage of.

I have a 99 Honda Civic (it's a spare car we're fixing up for one of our sons). It leaks power steering fluid. You can put a bottle in, it will last about a month.

Took the car into the shop. They said the rack and pinion steering is leaking at both ends. They'd have to replace the whole unit. About $800 (includes getting a realignment after replacing the parts).

Is pouring power steering sealant in there instead an option? It's a lot cheaper, of course, but would it really prevent the system from ultimately failing? Or should I bite the bullet and get it replaced?

Everybody know antifreeze is the cure all. Why would you use power steering sealant, when antifreeze has withstood the test of time to be the cure all of everything?

My personal experience is that sealants are always a temporary fix that cause wear on other components in the system, especially pumps. So, that said, I'd bit the bullet.

Wait for sauto et al to chime in though.

Go to a Honda forum and do a search...see if a R&P leak is a common issue. When I've had leaks it was always just the hoses to the pump. I dont have a Honda but it might be worth an hour of research..

Don't let the car shop screw you. 99% of time its a hose leaking and sometimes it just needs a wrench to tighten it back up. Might need to replace a hose.

If the rack is leaking the boots on the inner tie rod ends will be wet, it should be easy to verify that leak.

Is it dark blue or light blue?

A robin's egg blue doesn't get quite as hot in the summer as say, a midnight blue.

Although a midnight blue will hide minor hail damage far better than the robin's egg.
