One of the most enduring jokes of our time is also one of the most ironic, because it's not even a joke.

Playboy really was worth reading just for the articles. It was pioneering in finding content that was timely, explosive, covered both comprehensively and concisely, and it was coupled with quality fiction and editorial as well.

Of out all it's years of existence, there's probably 5-8 years worth total where I read the issue from cover to cover, every word on every page.

Only things that even come close to that consumption level for me has been Readers Digest and Saturday Evening Post, . . . maybe, MAYBE the first year of Maxim. Probably a couple of years of GQ in the early 1990s.

There's one with Lee Marvin from the 70's that is absolutely mind blowing. The candor in which these people would speak about their lives is unparalleled.

And not only were the interviews awesome, Hef himself donated time and money to Civil Rights and was a huge proponent of Free Speech. He saved the Hollywood Sign at a point when was nearly totally destroyed and was a supporter of gay rights way back in the 50's.

Not to mention, he was a cultural icon.

i remember when i was a kid, i'd sneak into my old man's shop and grab one of his playboy mags. then i'd take it back to my bedroom and read all the articles.

It's funny how I changed from the time I first picked up a Playboy until now when the interviews are one of my favorite things. I still always go through all the pictures before reading them now though...I'm not dead yet!
