Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million
Justice League’s opening weekend at the box office should have called for a celebration. Considering Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman all opened to over $100 million (the former taking $160 million), you would expect the Avengers-style blockbuster to make at least that much. However, despite being a gigantic superhero event — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash finally teaming up to defeat evil — cinema-goers just weren’t as excited as Warner Bros. predicted. Tracking for a $110 to $120 million opening weekend, Justice League took $96 million at the US box office, making just over $280 million worldwide. Unfortunately, despite still being a huge number, the studio is reportedly on track to lose $50 to $100 million once the movie has played out of cinemas. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...-a8075376.html |

A movie that features an ensemble cast of superheroes including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman is on pace to be the lowest of the 5 DC universe movies yet. If you can't see why that's bad, I dont know what to tell you.

Focusing on that second paragraph -- can I ask why? If they own the rights, and have tried twice and failed, why not license or sell back and get some $$$? Obviously Marvel knows WTF they are doing with these franchises... I'd rather get $$$ than just fail over and over and get nothing.

Because I actually work in the industry and understand how these numbers affect future projects and what these numbers actually mean.
The last thing that I "root for" is for any film to lose money. You're talking about ****ing with people's livelihood's. Not the Ben Affleck's of the world but the electricians and gaffers and VFX artists and costume designers and so on. It's not a ****ing sport. |

They tried their own "In Universe" this past summer, beginning with The Mummy, which didn't draw enough interest to continue with their "Dark Universe", so it's been all but officially cancelled. Also, Universal is very, very insular, though not quite as insular as Paramount. Uni has enough success with their other properties that jumping back into the Superhero genre, which will likely fail, especially if you read these types of threads. The bottom line is that it doesn't make any financial sense. |

So you're telling me Warner Bros will consider this movie and its earnings a success? When a comparable movie by Marvel did 1.5 billion?

I remember an article from years ago that said that WB accounting basically was claiming that Tim Burton's Batman was a financial disaster and had lost something like 100 million bucks (which back in late 80's was a shit ton of money). Basically it boiled down to a bunch of accounting mumbo jumbo and WB was just trying to get out of paying Jack what they owed him for his backloaded deal to do the movie. Justice League is not going to lose money.

And if you can't admit that DC's culmination movie making less than any of the movies leading up to it is a problem, you're not even arguing from a place of good faith. |

Universal owns the distribution rights. Marvel produced the second film because Uni didn’t follow up with a sequel within the contract limits. As it stands, Marvel can produce a film but can’t distribute. Plus, since Uni owns those rights, they refuse to allow The Hulk at Disney theme parks. This mess is all on Marvel. |
