Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million.

Justice League on track to lose Warner Bros. 'between 50 and 100 million

Justice League’s opening weekend at the box office should have called for a celebration.

Considering Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman all opened to over $100 million (the former taking $160 million), you would expect the Avengers-style blockbuster to make at least that much.

However, despite being a gigantic superhero event — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash finally teaming up to defeat evil — cinema-goers just weren’t as excited as Warner Bros. predicted.

Tracking for a $110 to $120 million opening weekend, Justice League took $96 million at the US box office, making just over $280 million worldwide. Unfortunately, despite still being a huge number, the studio is reportedly on track to lose $50 to $100 million once the movie has played out of cinemas.

A movie that features an ensemble cast of superheroes including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman is on pace to be the lowest of the 5 DC universe movies yet. If you can't see why that's bad, I dont know what to tell you.

I'd rather get $$$ than just fail over and over and get nothing.

The last thing that I "root for" is for any film to lose money.

You're talking about ****ing with people's livelihood's. Not the Ben Affleck's of the world but the electricians and gaffers and VFX artists and costume designers and so on.

It's not a ****ing sport.

Well, Sony finally gave in and partnered with Marvel for Spider-Man: Homecoming (which I thought was the best Spider-Man movie by a wide margin) but Universal is just very different in their outlook.

They tried their own "In Universe" this past summer, beginning with The Mummy, which didn't draw enough interest to continue with their "Dark Universe", so it's been all but officially cancelled.

Also, Universal is very, very insular, though not quite as insular as Paramount. Uni has enough success with their other properties that jumping back into the Superhero genre, which will likely fail, especially if you read these types of threads.

The bottom line is that it doesn't make any financial sense.

If the movie were to actually lose money, that would be considered bad.

This film isn't losing money.

And beyond that point, would you like to explain to us all Studio Accounting?

I sure as ****ing hell can.

Can any of you?

So you're telling me Warner Bros will consider this movie and its earnings a success? When a comparable movie by Marvel did 1.5 billion?

I remember an article from years ago that said that WB accounting basically was claiming that Tim Burton's Batman was a financial disaster and had lost something like 100 million bucks (which back in late 80's was a shit ton of money). Basically it boiled down to a bunch of accounting mumbo jumbo and WB was just trying to get out of paying Jack what they owed him for his backloaded deal to do the movie.

Justice League is not going to lose money.

Dude, Disney wrote down the original Pirates of the Caribbean as a loser, even though it earned more than $650 million, just to avoid deal points for Johnny Depp and a few others.

Sports don't effect people's livelihoods? Player, coaches, assistant coaches don't count? Your argument here is basically "don't criticize Alex Smith, because what about the equipment mangers and groundskeepers?" Nobody's blaming the ****ing gaffers, and it's not like Warner Bros is going to stop making movies because Justice League failed.

And if you can't admit that DC's culmination movie making less than any of the movies leading up to it is a problem, you're not even arguing from a place of good faith.

I thought the Ed Norton Hulk was made by Marvel Studios? Its part of the MCU canon and featured Downey's Iron Man.

It’s complicated.

Universal owns the distribution rights. Marvel produced the second film because Uni didn’t follow up with a sequel within the contract limits.

As it stands, Marvel can produce a film but can’t distribute. Plus, since Uni owns those rights, they refuse to allow The Hulk at Disney theme parks.

This mess is all on Marvel.
