Dave is awesome.
I'm convinced that he's the reason for Nirvana's success, not Cokehead. |

I mean... Not arguing that Kurt sucked. But he was a junkie. Smack addict. Heron fiend. Trying to make a nickname based on cocaine is kind of silly.

yeah I've read a lot of negative things about him on this site.
seems like a righteous dude to me....every single time I see him open his mouth he represents himself as a classy dude. I've often wondered where he'd be had Kurt not offed himself. wonder if he ever would have come out from behind that drum set.

Yeah, I actually never was much of a Nirvana fan. Foo Fighters is so much better to me.

I've seen negativity come from some on here saying he's a tool and not who he appears to be. I can't think of exact quotes but I've seen them. I won't swear to it....but I think Dane had some negative things to say.

But where Dave has lost me over the years (and I'm certainly not the only one) is his duplicitous nature regarding the music industry. He's railed on people for not "keeping it real" and proclaiming he's recording to tape, just like the "old days" and that others should "get real" and make a record in their garage, just like he's done. He's also stated that people should just "give away their music for free", just to get people to come and see bands live, because that's "what it's all about". Well, first off, Butch Vig may have recorded a few elements (drums, mostly) to tape but everything was simultaneously run to Pro Tools digitally and mixed with Pro Tools (and his vocals tuned as well). That's not "keeping it real", unless you're working in the 21st century, which is how everyone records. Anyone that records to tape is living in the past. Secondly, not everyone lives in a $4 million dollar home with a massive garage that's been professionally treated and soundproofed. Furthermore, 99.99999% of the world can't afford to purchase a 56 channel Neve console or a newer API console that he used for Wasting Light, nor can they afford Butch Vig. On top of that, most records these days are being made sans a giant mixing console, whether it's an SSL, API or Neve because it's just no longer necessary due to software emulations of classic hardware and the amazing (and extremely affordable) Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converters. And lastly, the notion of "Giving it away for Free" is his most duplicitous in nature. Dave's worth more than $250 million dollars and they're arguably the biggest rock band in the world. If anyone can afford to "Give away their music for free", it's Dave and the Foo's. Yet, shortly after he made that statement, his new record, Sonic Highways, was released with a download price of $9.99. So, Mr. "Give it away for free" chose not to give it away for free so apparently, he's not taking his own advice. All that said, he's a likeable guy who's extremely and ridiculously talented. He has the respect of artists and songwriters in nearly every genre and it's weird to criticize such a nice guy. But until he changes his duplicitous ways, he'll always have legitimate critics. |
