This turned up on Reddit's ever-excellent r/JustRolledIntoTheShop. There's no explanation for why this car was allowed to atrophy like this, but it's possible the person who uploaded this picture immediately recoiled in horror and had to go puke before posting anything further.

Here's the picture in high res.
Part of the reason I am always scared to buy a used car. Many people have no idea about basic maintenance and drive their cars hard.

I agree, but while I'm under the truck/car, I guess I've always just drained the oil and went with new.

Gotcha.

I didn't think about the bottom end. I bet there is sludge in the oil pan. I'm wondering is the pick up was clogged or at least headed that way.

One of the first jobs I ever had was as a clean up man at a giant gm dealership in the service department, mopping bays between jobs, throwing away trash, stuff like that. One of the things I remember about that place was that every mechanic had at least one can of Marvel Mystery Oil on his tool box. Anybody know what that stuff would be good for? Anybody ever use it?

It can be used in the crankcase and in the gas tank.

Supposed to keep things clean. I've never used it.

Change your oil like you're supposed to, and don't run your fuel tank on empty and you'll be okay, for the most part. Mine rarely gets below 1/4.
