Radar Detectors: Do You Use One?

Going on a trip in August, thinking about buying a radar detector. Looks like a good current model would run around $400, like a Escort Passport 9500ix. Can I get by decently with something less expensive like a Cobra XR9670 for around $150?

Because you don't have a detector lewdog.

Money saves me 6 minutes from work to class two nights a week. Then that back home. That's 6 minutes that allows me some food before school and time that sometimes gets me home before my sons bed time. 400 is nothing.

My commute isn't that bad. I can easily go 80-85 in the far left lanes on the freeway with the flow of traffic. Any faster and I am just changing lanes too many times like a dumbass trying to save a minute. These are the idiots who usually cause wrecks. That and slow pokes in the far lanes. They don't pull people over here doing 80 MPH on the freeway as multiple cars are usually doing it. Not worth it going more than 85 MPH on a 65 MPH freeway anyway.

It's a ferocious mascot that instills fear in opponents...

Well, maybe not all the time, but you wouldn't like it when it's angry.

Nothing wrong with that. I'm one of those assholes who boxes in the speeders and I hold them back.

I like to watch them swerve and switch lanes multiple times like stupid cats trying to get out of a cage.

When we discussed this in the gearhead thread, don't cops use a different tech than radar these days? Rendering radar dectors obsolete?

All I've done so far is motor around town. I've had a lot of luck using the WAZ app. I've yet to have a cop around that I didn't know about.

We drive 80 here now legally. I don't see any reason to go faster than that.

If you get one don't waste your money on a "cheaper" one. Spend the money and get the Escort Passport. They are the best IMO.

I have a Passport X50 and in Illinois the state troopers use laser detectors, at least some of them do. The detector wont pick it up until they are targeting YOU. Happened to me once and the detector just spazzed out. The front of the screen just said **** LASER **** and it was screaming. Other places will use check points and just clock your time and if you are way under the expected you'll get a visit.

Yes we had that discussion, no they haven't "switched". LiDAR (lasers) are gaining wider use but there are still a lot more radar units doing speed enforcement than there are LiDAR.
It's a bean counter thing. It takes a lot less training and experience for an officer to accurately use a LiDAR than it does a radar but a police chief can also outfit 3-5 patrol cars with radar for the price of a single LiDAR, depending on what radar and LiDAR we're talking about.

Just bought the Belltronics rx65 from Amazon(ref from Bwana) with the mirror holder for $200 +$35. I got a go fast CTS-V four door 6 speed 2 months ago and it is scary fast. I think that there's no law as too how fast from 0-60 mph, but does nothing flat too fast. 1ST does 48, 2nd = 90, 3 rd = 120. Not gonna find out what 4/5/6 does.

I normally do 6 mile over on the country roads here. On highway do 7-8 over. That is what cruise control is for. But with this beast, rather be safe then sorry.

Sucks thou, the car came with a wired in power source...D/C cable me thinks. Looks like these newer detectors need a "computer" cable type of connection. Thus I will have to direct wire again. I don't want a wire dangling down from the cig ligter/power source.

Thanks again for CP to give everyday advice... lawn care to hardware to cooking... and of course Chiefs news
