Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Chief fans in general and I would say a majority are happy with the trade. Or at least okay. CP is the only place in full meltdown. Just saying.

That's one poll. Have you looked around the other Chiefs websites, social media? It's pretty clear there is no massive outrage like fire Pioli, bench Cassel.

It took years to get to that point (although I was against Cassel the entire time). To me, lack of extreme vocal outrage is not equivalent to being 'happy'.

I'm not saying the majority are outraged, either. I think it's around the 45/45/10 range. Just reading the comments here (http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...fs-best-option) is a mixed bag.

There was a caller on fresco this am calling for Dorsey to be fired.

That's pretty extreme. Do I like the trade? No. Did I like the Cassel trade? No. Did I call for Pioli's head that early? No, and doing that to Dorsey at this time is insane. Lets see how the rest of the offseason goes in regard to free agency and the draft.

Grasping for straws here, but here's a reason for optimism. Alex Smith's yards per attempt the last 5 years, starting in 2007:

4.7
6.3
6.9
7.1
8.0

Definite and consistent improvement in the number that matters the most.

2. He should be cheap to sign (it seems everyone has gave up on him, so he shouldn't generate too much interest as a FA or cost to much in a trade)

3. He has a few years of starting experience (a rookie would likely take 3+ years to develop, and a free agent is more likely to make an immediate impact - consider Brees, Vick, Farve, McNabb, & Shaub)

4. He is still young enough to still be in the league in 10 years

A change of scenery might do Smith some good, and I think he would succeed under coaches like Haley and Weis.

I originally posted this on 10/10/2010: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showp...7&postcount=86

Looks like he didn't come too cheap, but hey, 4 out of 5 ain't bad...

Maybe I should start buying lottery tickets?
