Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

I'm in complete agreement with the writer's point in the second paragraph about the quality of books 4, 5, and 6.

Yeah, my first thought was to not watch season 5 because I don't want the books spoiled....then I remembered how ponderous Dance was.

Now to be fair to Martin, when you read the "Ball of Beasts" version, the story is just immeasurably better. The problem with how he did those 2 books was that, by breaking out characters, you're simply beat over the head with the same story line every 20 pages and it just gets tedious.

"Oh for ****'s sake, Daenerys - just do the guy already!" I can't ever remember hating chapters in any book more than the Daenerys chapters in Dance or the Sansa chapters in Feast. But when the stories are combined into one and you don't get such a dense distribution of them, they're not nearly as bad and suddenly you care about the outcome and the characters again. Okay...maybe not Sansa, but it still wasn't quite as bad.

Maybe the guy is right and Martin's just run out of gas or lost control of his instrument - it's happened to authors before. But it may just be as simple as a really really shitty editing decision to split that volume into 2 books. If so, maybe Martin still has his fastball and can get back to the apex form we saw in Storm.

Maybe Storm was just THAT good that the rest have come across as solidly "Meh" contributions (even though they are still good in their own rights)?

Yeah....I'm having a rough time getting through Feast right now. I've got about 200 pages left and it's just boring as shit. The Arya chapters are interesting...but even some of those are dragging on.

Quit.

Go download 'ball of beasts' to an E-Reader and just do it that way. It's significantly better.

I can't state that strongly enough - those books are pretty lousy on their own but they're actually pretty damn good when you combine them. The ball of beasts compilation takes both books and combines them in the correct chronological order.

Like I said, the editing of the full novel into 2 really screwed it up.

http://ballofbeasts.weebly.com/

I had to download the file and then locate it in my file manager to open it, but that was probably specific to my devices. The android readers weren't recognizing the file-path on their own so I found them, clicked them and those did 'open with' my Overdrive reader. It uploaded straight to the library at that point and that was that. Opened to the page I left off every time I booted it up.

You'll start with some overlap but it's much much more enjoyable.

Feast of Crows is easily the best book in this series behind Storm of Swords. It breaks my heart how many people (read:everyone!) dislike it. Bummer.

Dude, you have to remember that the GoT Universe is so vast that books 3 & 4 both take place on the same timeline but there was so much to tell it had to be broken up into 2 books.

Having said that I am glad to see you like Arya. She is one of my absolute favorites.

This seemed very much like a "let's see where everyone is" episode, a setup for things to come.

Also, nobody but nobody does drunken self-loathing like Tyrion Lannister. We should all take notes.
