Well....is she hot? Is my wife around?
Just kidding, the answer really is "depends on the person". |

If I haven't seen them in a while there is a reason.

Depends on how many drinks I've had.
Sober, it's usually not that enjoyable unless it's the right person.

Hah. I hadn't thought about that but that's a good point. If I'm sober, I'm as likely to act like I didn't see you as I am to engage you in conversation. If I'm drunk, you're getting a hug. |

Ran into an old friend last night, which was super uncomfortable considering he died in '97.

Considering I am in the witness relocation program no, I don't like running into old acquaintances.

Guy: "Mike! Hey man, how have you been?" Me: "Hey.... man! Not bad, how about you?" Guy: "Awesome. Hit me up sometime, we'll hang out." Me: "Ok. How do you spell your last name again?" Guy: "S-M-I-T-H (while giving me a look that says your an asshole for forgetting my name)." I just walked away. Pretty embarrassing lol. Worst part is his last name isn't Smith, but I'll be damned if I can remember it. It was something simple though.

Not a bad idea, but it could be bad form since the guy knew my first name

I do regularly and I'm typically very glad it happened.
If I didn't like them 10 years ago, depending on circumstances I'll walk on by, but sometimes people change. You never know where there is an opportunity.....either to reconnect on a personal level, or how you can help each other in business. Knowing people is powerful. |

I've recently had to forcibly change this behavior as I realize that the real important connections and opportunities happen in the more informal conversations outside the actual meetings. So I now try to treat the social aspect of conferences and meetings as "work" just like I do the actual work meetings.

Breaks, socials and lunch/dinner are where I do my best work at meetings/conferences.
That's definitely the place to get the best information and build relationships for future business. Example. I was early in my career and attending an out of state conference. I didn't recognize a soul and was out of place. Across the room I saw a guy I knew of from college, though we never really associated more than simple classroom stuff. The one thing in common made it easy to start the conversation. There has been some form of business relationship since with our companies. |
