I'm on 22 acres. I can have bon fires, shoot guns, pee outside, hunt deer and other critters in my own woods, ride around with the kids in a golf cart. Really, the woods aren't a hassle at all. Nature takes care of that. I just get lots of free firewood from them. Also got a huge garden, and lots of apple and peach trees in a small open area. I can't imaging living in a neighborhood. I let my dog out every morning in my boxers and usually just take a leak in the edge of the woods. I know, sounds lame, but there is something about freedom to do whatever the heck you want that is nice.

It's nice to get out of town. It's nice to be in the quiet. Closer to nature.

That being said, I live in town. I get enough of that at work.

I get having that much land but having 2-4 acres means at some point you'll have neighbors and you can see them. I'm not sure you'll be shooting a ton of guns like that and doing whatever you want.

2-4 acres isn't owning land. It's just a big yard that is a pain in the ass to mow. And no, you won't be doing much with it really. You get up past maybe 10 acres or so and there's a great chance you've got a decent amount of timber, maybe even a pond on your property. That would be great if you enjoy hunting, fishing, ATV's, or just being outdoors in the woods.

My grandparents had 40 acres behind their house when I was growing up. It was ****ing awesome. They had some cattle on their property, but I will always remember just going out in the woods and hanging out with my brother on summer days. Mushroom and arrowhead hunting. Shit like that.

That was my initial thought, which is why I posed the question. Two acres made me think of spending the weekends mowing grass.

It's a lot of work. A lot of mowing, chainsawing, spraying, fence fixing etc. a tractor is a must. but watching the deer, bobcats, turkeys, owls, and the occasional coyote is kind of fun.

It's not the end of the world, but you're going to take 3-4 hours of your life to mow it on a rider, unless you invest in a zero turn. And hopefully you've got a somewhat flat piece of land and not the hilly swamp/pasture mixture type of land. If you're so inclined to weed eat the bastard you're going to waste your life away.

I have a half acre city lot that takes me about 1.5 hours to mow and weed eat every ten days or so. I enjoy it because it's not a big time suck. My dad had a couple of different houses on 3-4 acres when I was a kid. Mowing wasn't my favorite back then, even on a rider.

Yeah, that's the cool part. Fortunately, I see deer and coyote every day, whether it's on the hillside behind me or at Lake Hollywood (lots of doe right now).

There's a tagged bobcat in the area and I'm actually glad I haven't seen her.

I used to mow lawns in the summer during junior high for $16 dollars a yard. It was a gigantic PITA, especially the people with hilly yards. I went through a few blades, too.

Yeah, we love it. Might not be for everyone, and sometimes when we go to friends homes in neighborhoods, it seems nice to have neighbors that you can chat with. One of our favorite things to do, particularly in colder months, is to go back into our woods at night with the kids and a thermos of hot chocolate. I'll build a small fire down on a sandbar on our creek, and we will sit around with the kids and drink hot chocolate. Kids absolutely love doing that. Once in a while I'll try to scare them with some scary monster in the woods shit. Now that they are a bit older, they always ask me to try to scare them with a story. LOL, shit I hope they never forget.

The land question is interesting. I could definitely see the advantages of having significant land at my house (e.g., 20+ acres). That would be cool. But that assumes that you're letting it pretty much be wild.

Big classic lawns look cool, but man, I hate yardwork. I live in the middle of the city now, and my lawn is really small. It's more or less an outdoor room. But that's actually what I prefer. We took the grass out and installed native plants and a big patio, and the yard is almost maintenance free now. We have a service that comes and pulls weeds and rakes leaves, and I don't do anything. I wouldn't want to have a classic lawn now.

That said, I realize that my preferences won't work for everybody. If you have kids and dogs and stuff, you have good reasons to want a big classic lawn.

Crazy how house and car prices have gone up. I bought a new car in early 70s for 2500.00 and built houses that were 1500 sq ft with full basements for 38,000.00
