Mansionmania Tournament: Round 1, Heat 9

Mansionmania continues. I'm going to show you the most expensive homes in every state and a few territories, with a few extras thrown in from the largest states to get the tourney up to 64. It'll be a single-elimination tournament.

You will choose among each pair of houses with the following assumptions:
  • The purchase price for you is $0.
  • All maintenance, utilities, property taxes, and cleaning is included.
  • You must live in the home for the rest of your life.
  • You can't travel more than 100 miles from home (via google maps drive time) other than 1 two-week vacation each year.
  • You get $250,000 per year as a living allowance
  • You get an additional living allowance at the cheaper home, which will be valued at 1% of any cost difference annually. I will note this amount in the poll.
  • You get the furnishings. If unfurnished, you get an allowance that will give you mid-grade furniture in every room.
  • You get any vehicles in the garage. But only the garage - nothing parked outside.

I encourage you to click on the maps in the listings to see the general location and neighborhood.

Also, I will only enter contestants if they have a sufficient number of photos to judge, as determined by me.

Your entries in this heat are:

I bet if you took a second to understand how much people are willing to pay for a jug of horse sperm or to let your stallion **** their mare, you would learn to love horses.

Well, neither of these houses seems to have a pool, presumably to keep the horses from falling in.

This heat is more a battle of outbuildings than anything else. When I look at the part that I care about most - the houses - both houses are actually pretty nice and classy. I would award points to New Hampshire because the house is bigger and is a little more in my wheelhouse. But both are nice.

New Hampshire gives me access to Boston, which has a lot of amenities but is also close to tom brady fans. There are also some coastal things to do, I presume. I've never lived near a coast, but people seem to think that's' a good thing. On the other hand, Kentucky gives me access to both Cincinnati and Louisville, which ... well, okay. Culturally, I'm a closer fit to those cities than to anything in New England, but I'm not a good cultural fit in either place.

The New Hampshire house seems to be located near a swamp, which seems like it would be problematic. It's got 15 acres, along with several outbuildings that I don't need at all. Kentucky has 262 acres, but it appears to be a serious horse enterprise working farm, and I have zero interest in that.

It's a close one, but I like the look of that New Hampshire house and that's where I'll spend most of my time. Also, the magnitude of the Kentucky horse operation bothers me a bit. Even though I don't think it would be utopia for me, I'll go with New Hampshire.

I'll just stick with my annual stipend and let the horses handle their own romantic relationships.

Going with NH on this one. Ocean access. Boston. I like the openness of the house and the land. Not much to dislike.

I actually really like the NH home. It's simple yet elegant.

The Kentucky home does nothing for me but I'm sure I could find some fun ways to dick around with all that land and money.

Maybe I've got this all wrong. Maybe it's not that rich people play with horses. Maybe it's that playing with horses makes people rich. Hmm.

I really like both of those properties - both are beautiful and I like both homes quite a bit.

Going Kentucky though for a few reasons:

A) While not enormous, there is a stipend difference that will add up over time.

B) Raw acreage - no replacement for displacement, lads...

C) Location/access - the Kentucky home gives you access to Lexington and Louisville (college towns are great) not to mention Cincinnati which is home to both an AFC football team AND a National League baseball team so I can get my sports fixes and occasionally see the Cardinals/Chiefs in person without burning precious vacation weeks.

EDIT: I airmailed the ocean access in NH, but man, the North Atlantic is less 'ocean access' and more 'really F'ing cold waves access'. Apart from the views, I'm not sure what there is to really enjoy about going to a beach in New Hampshire. I'm probably wrong, though...

Historically, people who live on that coast get wiped out by invaders, too.

Probably get to see more Phish shows within a 100mi radius of the NH property, so I think that would be the deciding factor between these two.

Doubt that the winner advances out of the next round.
