If you're not responsible for the break, I don't know how you could be responsible for the water, but legally, I have no idea.

Contact the water company, they may forgive a leak after you fix it, and water use returns to normal

You ****ing dumbass , yes you're responsible and you will have to pay for the water damage too !!!
If you leave the house during cold weather leave the water trickling so it doesn't freeze. Read the rental contract you signed. It says in bold print that if you're tooo ****ing stupid to take care of the property properly then you have to pay for EVERYTHING that happens to it. |

I moved in to a house that had a leaky toilet. I had stuff switched to my name for two days prior to me moving in. The house was vacant. I fixed it and the water company forgave the $200 leak.

I've had a couple leaks forgiven over the years too...if its winter, especially, it should be easy

The pipe the burst was on a sun porch in the back. At some point I am guessing an elderly couple moved their washer and dryer out there. Neither of those are back there anymore, and instead are in the basement. There is also a heating vent that keeps the porch at a reasonable temperature. In the few months I have lived here, I never once thought those water lines were still on (the hot wasn't - it broke last year apparently). When I had to shut the water off I found the wonderfully DIY version of how they plumbed that back porch. It is a mess, and there was no way to shut the water off out there without shutting off water to the kitchen sink and the shower. The plumber found it ridiculous and couldn't figure out why anybody would do what they had done. He cut the lines and capped them.
