Covitz:Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Former Chief Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Cornerback Brandon Flowers may have lost his job with the Chiefs, but he didn’t lose his self-confidence.

Flowers, who was quickly signed by AFC West rival San Diego last week, 11 days after his release by the Chiefs, blew his horn pretty loudly in an interview with NFL Network last week.

Here’s an excerpt from that interview with Flowers, who last year made the first Pro Bowl in his six-year career, though he had been moved from left cornerback to a slot corner early in the season.

On who’s the best cornerback in the NFL:

“First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football. Don’t let my injuries last year fool you and take my name from that top list. One guy whose game I definitely respect throughout the years was (Darrelle) Revis. Coming from a system that he played in, it’s a lot of man-to-man being played, him shadowing receivers, and he definitely put in that work. Not to say anything else bad about the other corners, but Revis is definitely a corner I respect in this league.”

On how he felt when he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs:

“I was very surprised when it happened. I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.”

On his familiarity staying within the division affecting his decision:

“That made it comfortable. I also respected San Diego playing them throughout the years (and) how they run their organization. I always had respect for their players. It’s always hard fought, tough games when we played San Diego. I always sit on the other opposing side that I would love to play for a guy like Philip Rivers. He’s so fiery. He’s always got that attitude. He’s got that ‘want to.’ You can’t ask for nothing else from your leader. I think it’s the perfect match for me.”

On his favorite thing from Kansas City and his favorite teammate:

“My favorite thing about Kansas City was the fans. It felt like I never left college playing for Kansas City. No matter if we were winning four games … it was still crazy. You go to the malls, and everyone had on red. It was crazy. The fans were definitely my favorite thing about K.C.”

“As far as teammate-wise, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles were both my boys. (I’ve) been teammates with those guys for years. Off the field, we were always together. Those are my two. I can’t pick one over the other.”

You're a ****ing moron.
Players at this level are all supremely confident in their ability.
The only difference between today and eras past is the access availabe to players through the media, be it social or mainstream.

It's all about Brandon I'm afraid but if he can get the $$ more power to him. San Diego will be disappointed in the long run. Here are to BIG WRs aaaaaaaaaaaall day !!
Again, ****ing moronic.
Players have a small window to earn the money they make, and they are fully aware of that.
They would be stupid to sacrifice the dolars for the fans.
We, as fans, are stupid to expect that.

My point was that even at his best he was 'near' and that was 4+ years ago.

All of the angst this created is hilarious, between Cooper and Parker someone will fill in just fine, probably even better based on size and skill set... Flowers was a poor fit and cost too much money.

Best of luck to him but the Chiefs are now moving the **** on... bigger, faster, younger.

With the Houston and Smith situations looming large, moving Brandon had to be done, and it was going to happen eventually anyway because, again, he's not a great fit for this scheme moving forward.

Why put it off, just get it done, free up that money and coach up these big, speedy kids... all is not lost with Flowers departure.

Also Larry Fitzgerald. Brandon Marshall seems like a very nice/humble dude as well. I know he has a bad past but he seems to have matured a ton and is a great role model.

Thought of a few more. As for Cbs peanut Tillman seems like a very nice, humble dude. Also megatron, Andre Johnson, polamalu, can't recall hail or Charles saying much of anything cocky. Also Patrick Willis seems very cool. Watched a documentary thing on him. Very awesome guy. There are tons of great players who are humble.

You are and idiot.

We have a ton of "star" players on defense. Houston, Hali, Powe, Berry, Johnson.

The issue has always been finding guys for depth and to fill out the team.

I'm a Flowers fan but at $10MM he wasn't worth it just like Carr wasn't 3 years ago.

The rules **** the CB so you must have pass rushers and good safeties. Period. The $ needs to be spent on Houston and Berry. Especially if Ford works out.

It is what it is. Flowers should have stayed on a restructured deal which I am sure they tried to work out. His ass got greedy.
