Hey, I applaud Kaepernick for his donations and civic participation.

Kudos to the man.

But in an era where ratings have fallen 20% or more, the NFL can't offord to have someone take the focus off the game and into a controversial player.

Forget the NFL aspect for a moment. He is trying to make some political/social point with the tweet. What exactly is that meme supposed to mean? I suspect it's just to get people associating slavery with police to get them worked up and feel like slaves in the eyes of police or for some other gotcha reason that doesn't seem to make sense, but am willing to listen if there is some other important historical and factual connection.

I think some smart people need to try to modify police training so that less people are shot or killed by police without there being any increase in police officer injuries or deaths.

I think that is possible, but it will require an exceptional level of intelligence and good faith cooperation.

This idea of making things better by "dismantling" a system sounds like some simplistic nonsense that his girlfriend tells him to say.

What is he suggesting with that meme? This tweet itself is pretty vague. Anything that is comparing slavery and practices around enforcing it to modern policing and law is purposefully inflammatory and only attempting to anger people, not inform them.

This was a bad week for people who feel like bad, reactive police aren't being held accountable; between the Castile verdict and the breaking story about a pregnant woman being shot to death in her home (after reporting a burglary herself).

The circumstances of each of these incidents can be - and are - argued upon, but I absolutely understand how black friends of mine lose their trust in the police when they see their innocent peers gunned down even when they seemingly did what they were "supposed" to do.

IF Kaepernick truly prioritizes his career in football above all else, then his publicly-stated opinions are absolutely ill-advised in an era where a primary player evaluation is whether or not football is a player's "life". It's completely understandable from an NFL team's perspective that he's not a desirable signing.

That being said, I haven't seen any evidence to say that's how Kaepernick prioritizes his life, and if civil rights are as important to him as they seem, I find it admirable that he's willing to sacrifice a career (and a lot of extra money) to further his cause.

The argument takes the broad strokes of;

1) the end of slavery
2) statistical rises in incarceration
3) the incidence of use of prisoners a labor force, and
4) anecdotal evidence of laws crafted that impact minorities at a higher rate

to argue that America made a purposeful choice to re-enslave blacks after the Civil War emancipated them by using the pretext of illegal behavior, and resulting prison sentences, to enslave them for said prohibited behavior, replacing enslavement based on property rights.

Slave patrol protecting slavery as an institution of social order.

Police force protecting mass incarceration as an institution of social order.

It's definitely a provacative way to bring about discussion, but it's working.
