The Dark Tower
Holy shit, it's actually happening. For real.
Starring Idris Elba as the gunslinger (which might explain the recent weird rumor about a white actress being cast as susannah...) and Matthew McConaughey as the man in black. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and targeted to be in theaters next January. Somehow. Quote:

I've recanted my earlier position though and will watch when it comes out. I do so with trepidation due to the possibility they may re-write the story to squeeze it into a movie as is sometimes the case with King's works.

The second I saw that they had cast Idris Elba I thought to myself, "that's perfect. He's compeltely Roland."
This is the single best casting choice I can remember since RDJ as Iron Man. And I may even like it more than that. |

I think they're still scheduled to expand into a tv series next year.
Still not sure how much wide appeal this will have, how much of an audience it will find. |

King really went over the top with the whole Susanna/Odetta jive. He really laid it in thick.

That seems a little more Disney Buddy Movie than I had expected/hoped.
I mean, I know the kid is a part of it but perhaps a missed just how central to the story he was (and in fairness, I simply haven't made it very far). Also...Elba might be a little too, well lack of a better way of putting it, handsome. The Cowboy from Preacher is pretty much exactly who I see when I see when I think of Roland: It's certainly possible that I'm just wrong, but Elba isn't quite as weathered and beaten down as I expect he should be. My recollection was that for large parts of that book, Roland has all but decided that life is just a pain in the ass and he's had more than enough of it. He gives off a shattered vibe that colors my impression of how he'd look.

I was trying to come up with some version of Josh Brolin if you make him lose 40 lbs and aged him up 10 years.
And yeah, Eastwood is close. Maybe not as broken down as he was in Unforgiven but not as sturdy as he was in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly either. He wasn't really doing any westerns during the timeframe that I think he'd have been perfect for it. But had he done Outlaw Josey Wales around the time he made Hearbreak Ridge, I think you'd be pretty close to spot-on there. And like I said - I may just not be right; perhaps King had a much more put together hero in mind here. It's just not the impression I got from the reading.

Here's one - Richard Boone as John Faine in Big Jake.

Well I'll be damned.
Pale Rider Eastwood is the Heartbreak Ridge era Eastwood I was envisioning. I've never actually seen it and didn't realize that it was a mid-80s movie. He pretty much looks to be 'playing Outlaw Josey Wales around the time he made Hearbreak Ridge' there, doesn't he? Yeah, that's a damn good one.
