2017-2018 NHL Offseason Thread

Not sure this is thread-worthy, but I'm bored and this should be a crazy off-season with the inclusion of the Golden Knights.

Busy couple of weeks ahead.

Also, I think STL made a nice quiet signing in Beau Bennett. He has had injury issues but he is a pretty good possession guy who is capable of scoring a lot more than he has. Lot of Devil fans wanted to keep him and give him more time to live up to his potential but I guess they wanted room for all the young forwards we have. Also rumors he wasn't all effort at the end of the year which is part of why Cammallari is gone.
That Johansson deal shocked me a bit. Well done Devils. The fact they picked up Boyle was also a surprise. Overpaid a bit but a nice pick up none the less.

Devils have a bajillion dollars in cap space. Any kind of contract that only lasts 2 or 3 seasons they can do whatever they want and it won't matter.

Really their two best assets are cap space and LW/C's right now. Retaining salary or taking a dead contract for a defensman somehow would be the next move. That or trading a LW for one or even actually getting a Kovy trade.

I saw McDavid's deal earlier and got to wondering how much players do their own homework when it comes to balancing huge deals like this with trying to win Cups, especially when Chicago's currently the prime example of how two players taking up $20 million/year isn't such a great idea.... then I found this, apparently McDavid felt bad.... yet, $1 million/year down to $12.25 million?

And Draisaitl wants $9 million/year.

Gonna be tough give 21.25 to just McDavid and Draisaitl but I think you have to pay Draisaitl. Even in an even trade, I would prefer to risk paying Draisaitl vs. moving him. Obviously I'm not the only one that thinks he is/will be special, but I would hate to let him go. PIT has handled pulling it off, EDM is just going to have to go that route.

In the end PIT and CHI have seen enough results to justify the situation, even if it's trouble down the road.

Offer sheet on Draisaitl is still a possibility. (I have a bad feeling about a 2020 lockout)

Is there anyone that can talk me off the ledge about this hire for Team USA? I know with the NHL not participating options are limited, but damn, you would think they could do better.

Oh man, I hated him with a passion when he was HC of the Avalanche... he was the Ned Yost of lines, except his shit never worked. I remember him putting Forsberg with a couple scrubs and then seeing his beautiful passing completely go to waste... and he had Selanne in the doghouse for most of the season.

So, to answer your question, no I cannot.... except I assume he's learned something about hockey in the past 15 years.

It looks like he did OK with Wisconsin last year, and that is the age of players he will be coaching. But still, not optimistic for Team USA.

Well if you're going to hire a former divealanche head coach, at least it isn't Patrick Roy.

What a ****ing rockhead that guy was.

Pre Season Hockey starts on Saturday. Congrats to BigErn McGrattan on his new role with the Calgary Flames! Glad to see that, loved him during his time in Nashville.

Granato is a decent assistant, He's like the Romeo Crennel of the NHL. He can't head coach worth a bleep, but is an excellent assistant.
