Life After 20 years, looks like I'm moving back to KC - Page 3

As the title says, got a job offer today and it looks like I'll be moving the family to KC at the end of April. While we've enjoyed our time in Louisville, we are really looking forward to living somewhere where the kids can see their extended family and the free daycare from grandma will allow my wife to go back to work which will really help finances. Living in Chiefs country will be great considering that for the last 20 years I've lived in a baseball city (St. Louis) and a city with no professional sports (Louisville). Hopefully I'll get a chance to see Molitoth's band!

So where do we live? We'll probably rent a house for a year or two until we find a place we want to buy. My oldest kid turns 4 in July, so we have 2 years before he starts kindergarten. I grew up north of the river and my folks still live there, so it would be convenient from a babysitting perspective, but I'll be working in Overland Park. Ideally, we'd like to live somewhere that isn't too terribly far from downtown, but far enough away to have a yard and not worry about the kids playing in the neighborhood. Based on my memories, I feel like Parkville would be perfect, but I'm not seeing a lot of rental properties on Trulia or the like.

I frankly know nothing about Johnson County. It's always had this vague Stepford quality to me and seemed like franchise hell. I do recognize there are tax implications to living in Missouri and working in Kansas, but I'm not sure if that is enough of an issue to really care. There are a lot of reasonably priced, nice looking rental options out there and that is a bit of a draw at this point.

So I'm opening it up to the great minds at ChiefsPlanet. Where should we be looking?

So what happened to Gladstone? When I was growing up, it was one of the more vibrant northland communities. Sounds like it is dead now.

Not true. I live in MO and work in KS and get credit for taxes paid to KS on my MO return. We got every penny back that was withheld for MO for the 2017 tax year.

I think it just got old. My brother lives there with his young family now and in his neighborhood it's all elderly people and people whose kids are graduated and moved out. I'm not sure that's how it is all over Gladstone and if you were just looking for reasonable housing and modest schools it's fine. If you want a growing community with lots of young families and really good schools, you should probably look elsewhere (e.g. Parkville).

He probably just means you have to file in both states.

Seriously though, there are many circumstances where renting is the better financial alternative. We happen to be in one of those situations.

Specifically, I have no idea where I actually want to lay down roots in a city that I haven’t lived in for 20 years. I’m not going to make that decision in a month either. As I mentioned, I’ve got two years before my oldest starts kindergarten. So I’ve got until then to figure it out. Chances are that buying a house and selling it in two years is going to net me so little equity that i’ll have thrown away much more money than renting over that same period.

Also, and this isn’t a small part of the decision, our household income will more than double and probably approach triple in that time. I’ll be able to affords much more house then.

How about Knobtown? Titty Bar, Liquor store and gun range are all close by, plus Unity Village isn’t too far so it’s convenient for Church on Sunday.

Not as good as Bates City for meth proximity, but I can tell you're obviously thinking of the kids in the equation.

From your work and where your parents live...

My crystal ball says "Midtown/Brookside, or North of the River."

You need to be looking Brookside/Midtown or Northtown/Parkville/Gladstone if you want that babysitting.

Old people don't like to drive in KC.
