Saw it last night to avoid a estrogen filled book club meeting happening at my house. Went to the first showing in my town. IMAX 3D. The glasses are getting much better, not as dark as previous versions.
Started way to slow. Hated Will Smiths son. Thats the best guy they could find? Very cliche ridden from start to finish. The story didn't flow at all. Best was Goldblum and his Dad's interactions. The CGI, fight scenes, flight scenes were some of the best ever done on film. They spent the money thats for sure. That alone makes it worth the prices of admission.

Just saw it. It wasn't worth the money. Wait and make it a red box night.

Original was just a product of its time.....and nobody was clamoring for a sequel anymore. At least 15 years too late.

I think it probably had to do with your age when the original came out too. I thought the original was garbage, but I'm probably a little older than you.

I didn't like the original at all. It was the summer blockbuster that made me think that, with enough advertising, people would watch anything. Not that I'm saying that it's the worst movie made or anything - i just think it was the first, in what has become a very long line, of billion dollar "popcorn flicks" that have zero substance and aren't innovative in any way other than how that can find new ways to squeeze in CGI.

I agree. Original is not a very good film. But it was marketed well and hit a certain 'rah, rah 'Merica' cord at the time. Emmerich makes the same movies over and over. Destruction porn. That's all he's got.

Even sillier than the original, with a worse script (wasn't near as funny), worse dialogue and worse characters.
Still enjoyed every second of it. WE'RE GONNA KICK SOME SERIOUS ALIEN ASS roll credits |

The only reason I really loved the original was (to me) it was the first time a 50's sci-fi movie got a truly BIG BUDGET. It was War of The Worlds with real Hollywood money. At the time time it came out there was very little (Hollywood) money behind this type of flick.

That's exactly what this is though: a 50s sci-fi movie with a big budget.
It's so ****ing silly. It's not just a rehash of the original, either. Go see it. |

I both loved the idea and thought "Hell yeah! That with USA money is golden!" Then all the performances were $3it (other than THE PROFESSIONAL, and when the French guy saves your ass, just, ugh...)
