100 yard NFL Rushers

I could have put this in my 100 yard Chiefs thread, but I thought it made for an interesting enough thread to be standalone.

Since 1960, 745 players have rushed for 100 or more yards in a game, and it has happened 5,203 times before today's game.

Jamaal is currently 114th on the list with 23. Here's a list of the players who are ahead of him.

Spoiler!

It's certainly an odd list. Jamaal is in the same career productivity realm as guys like Jim Taylor and Marcus Allen and Billy Sims, but then so are guys like Willie Parker and Stephen Davis.

The top of the list is a little odd, too. You'd certainly expect the top three or four guys, but the top twenty has a lot of surprises. Fred Taylor? Chris Johnson? Clinton Portis? Corey Dillon? These were all fine players, but I wouldn't have put them in the top 20.

More stats coming in followup posts.

Oh, and here's the entire list of everyone who's ever had a 100 yard rushing day. Rep if you can guess them all before looking.

Spoiler!

It's amazing the difference in standards that some people have in a rep worthy post. You want people to name every 100 yard game NFL rusher in the history of the league. I, on the other hand, will rep someone if I see a decent fart joke.

100 yard may not be an accurate measure of greatness since Jerome Bettis is ranked so high, so let's move up to a more elite level. How many running backs have had a 150 yard rushing day?

The answer is 292, and they're listed here:

Spoiler!

This seems more accurate in predicting stardom. If you look at the top of the list, it's pretty much all Hall of Famers, plus the inexplicable presence of Ahman Green.

The players with the most 100+ yard rushing games who never had a 150+ game? The top half dozen are:

Former 49er and Ram Wendell Tyler with 18.
Larry Csonka with 16
Sweetness replacement Neal Anderson with 14.
Ryan Matthews, John Brockington, and Brandon Jacobs with 13. (Ryan Matthews? Weird. He may end up owning this list.)

Now let's look at the super-elite. How many have rushed for 200+ yards in a game?

This list narrows to just 83 players, shown below:

Spoiler!

Here we see that O.J. Simpson's slashing style also was effective on the football field. But Tiki Barber tied for second? Really? How odd. And while Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, and Walter Payton remain high on this list, Emmitt Smith barely makes it.

And I know you're waiting for this, so let's look at the number of 250+ yard games. Only 11 players have done it, and only 1 player has done it more than once.

Another rather odd list that includes some great players, but only two current hall of famers and a fair number of flukes. I would suspect that luck plays some role in a 250+ game, though it's still got a disproportionate number of very good players on the list.

O.J. Simpson* 2
Adrian Peterson 1
Corey Dillon 1
DeMarco Murray 1
Doug Martin 1
Jamaal Charles 1
Jamal Lewis 1
Jerome Harrison 1
Mike Anderson 1
Shaun Alexander 1
Walter Payton* 1

The teams with the most 100+ yard rushing performances tended to get their numbers padded by a superstar. Note that some of these abbreviations are for teams that moved or were renamed, so you might have to do a little adding. Plus, the figures mix the Texans and Oilers together as HOU. The Chiefs are actually the 5th best team if you add their Dallas Texans performances at the bottom of the list.

Among teams that have yielded a 100+ yard rushing performance, the Chiefs don't do so well.

Historically, if you really want to see a 100+ yard performance, go see a Steelers-Browns game. The odds are good that a Steeler will gain 100+ yards.

Do all gays have super vision or just the one in the hot tub? Is it a product of his gayness, the hot tub, or just genetics?

I ask because sperm are not visible to the naked eye. Ejaculate, on the other hand, is definitely visible without a visual aid.

/score one for being technically correct!

The oldest player to rush for 100+ yards was Macarthur Lane, who did it for the Chiefs at age 36. Only one other player rushed for 100 yards or more after their 36th birthday, but John Riggins did it three times.

The youngest player to rush for 100+ yards was Rashaan Salaam, who did it on his 21st birthday.

The most attempts to reach the 100 yard mark was Jamie Morris of the Redskins, who carried 45 times for 152 yards in a 1988 game. But the lowest average was Natrone Means, who averaged 2.7 yards per attempt when he ran 37 times for 101 yards in 1998.

The fewest attempts and highest average was by Brian Mitchell, who ran 2 times for 105 yards in a Year 2000 game.

You have to wonder about the back story there. Here's the game summary: http://www.pro-football-reference.co...8812170cin.htm

It was the last game of the season, and Washington was out of the playoff hunt. Morris was a rookie who apparently only started getting regular carries in the last month. They ran 2 reverses and 45 Morris carries, and threw the ball 22 times in a loss. Maybe they just wanted to run the clock out and start on the offseason. But it apparently backfired since the game went into overtime.
