Watched the first two so far. Seems decent, like a more realistic, sexy, violent Hogwart's.

I looked at the avclub reviews, and it's not getting great ones.
Personally, I'm really liking it, and I hope it gets to continue (it did get renewed for a second season). The series really travels and goes to some interesting places, though it also starts to get really trippy. I'll be curious to see if they can pull it off. They're just scratching the surface at this point.

Started a thread on this months ago, but I can't find hide nor hair of it now.
I think it's absolutely horrible, one of the worst shows on SyFy, but I keep watching for some reason. The acting is wooden and lifeless, the storylines are stupid and have no real connection to the books (which are great, by the way, much, much better than the series). It's almost as bad as what they did to Jim Butcher's Dresden Files about a decade ago. |

EDIT: Oh, and I loved the Dresden files. The books and the series. I'll take what they did to that show over what MTV did to Elfstones any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Paul Blackthorne was pretty much the only redeeming quality of the Dresden Files. He was perfect as harry. Although seeing the show got me to read the books, so I'm happy they had a season...
God, Shannara is so bad. Almost as bad as The Magicians. But I guess that's like comparing flavors of diarrhea. Either way you have shit. Although I think Manu Bennet by himself is better than anyone else on either show. More stupid-named Druid, less of everybody else. But those books are so terrible anyway, so I'm not surprised that one's as bad as it is. It's like being surprised that the Legend of the Seeker series was bad... Like, why really? The books suck. So of course the show sucks. I'm actually disappointed The Magicians isn't better. At least you're starting with something decent there. |

Yeah, Shannara isn't high quality to begin with. Can't compare Grossman as I have to start the book back up. Really enjoyed the entire story at Brakebills, but it started to slow down when they left and got a flat together. Got into other stuff. Will definitely go back, but will probably wait until after the season. If nothing else, I've been pretty pleased with the special effects so far. Some of it has been pretty cool. Yeah, if it had been somebody other than Blackthorne, Dresden would have sucked. He was great.

The show looks interesting, but I probably won't watch until it gets renewed for a second season. Been burned too many times on one and dones.
What book series is it based on? Always looking for good fantasy/sci-fi to read.

Still no love for this show? It's gotten steadily better, imo, though I guess a lot of people are put off by the decadent and sort of "MTV" nature of the show.

Seemed a rather violent end to the season. Up and down moments, but overall I liked the show.
