Ten Things About Today's Game Week 3: KC 38 SF 27

Ten Things About Today’s Game Week 3: KC 38 SF 27

10. Believe it or not, I’m very much of a private person and have become somewhat reclusive compared to my younger Blowfish self. I don’t particularly like to schmooze, or go to professional networking events, or hang out with total strangers. I made an exception last night and accepted a dinner invitation to join Simply Red, Clay and Twisted Chief for a nice dinner on the Plaza. I had met Twisted Chief last season, and met Clay and SR for the first time. They seem nice. Actually we talked a lot about the Chiefs of course, and about other stuff as well, and just had a fabulous meal and a great time. Every CP'er I’ve met in person has been pleasant and friendly. Anyway, just wanted to thank Twisted Chief for setting it up and for inviting me.

9. After all three of our local college teams got smoked yesterday, I was hoping for much better results for the home opener. Weather was perfect, and I hadn’t heard a single pundit or prognosticator pick the Niners to win at Arrowhead. Didn’t get to tailgate today because parking is still a giant cluster F, and it took nearly hour to get from US 40 and Stadium to the place where they parked me. I went in at 10AM, didn’t get out of my car until just after 11AM. And they parked me in Olathe. It wasn’t even a paved lot, and I have Red Reserved parking. Not sure how far Mrs. B and I walked today, but we definitely got our cardio in for the week. Once in the stadium, there was plenty of energy. We had Fox Sports today since we were playing an NFC team. Here’s a picture of their camera guy on the sidelines right before kickoff:

Simply Red and Clay were sitting just down the row from me. Here’s pic of SR, you can see him with his red fedora on:

When Mahomes came out for the introductions, he was the last offensive player introduced and the roar for him was thundering. The better this kid plays, the more expectation is going to be heaped on him. I just hope he can keep a level head, and not get immersed in his press clippings.

8. This game was truly a tale of two halves. Chiefs fans are superstitious about having big leads at halftime, because we’ve seen Andy and Grandpa Bob blow historic leads against Andrew Luck and Marcus Mariota. Showtime scored a TD on every offensive drive in the first half. That may be the first time I’ve ever seen a Chiefs team do that at Arrowhead. Niners defense had no answer for anything in the first half. They were sliced and diced by Mahomes, who has thrown for almost as many TD’s this season as Alex had all of last season. But, in true yin and yang fashion, the same team that put up 35 in one half, came out in the second half and could only put up a field goal. The third quarter was all Niners, and you have to give them credit for not mailing it in and rolling over after the half. Their defense played very well in the second half, and made a game that looked like a blowout interesting until about the four minute mark in the final quarter. One other thing I wanted to say about Mahomes: He is engaged with his other offensive players after they come off the field. Alex used to just go over and sit down next to the OC or QB coach, look at his little blue laptop and not say a word to anybody. Mahomes is over talking to the O-Line and skill players. You can tell the rest of the offense just LOVES this guy, and they’ve got his back. He’s got charisma, and he’s going to just get better and better at his leadership skills. I’m very excited about this, as that’s something you can’t coach or teach. You either have it or you don’t. Showtime has it big time.

7. The tight ends for both teams were outstanding. Kittle for SF ate our lunch. None of our linebackers could cover him, and none of our DBs could tackle him. He steamrolled both Nelson and Scandrick. But our guy is pretty good too. Kelce made one of the greatest catches I’ve seen in a long time right in front of me at midfield. A one-handed snag with a guy draped all over him for a first down to sustain a drive.
View My Video
Kelce had 100 plus receiving for the second week in a row. People say Gronk is the best in the league, but that catch by Kelce is one I don’t think Tony Gonzalez would have made in his prime. Just a remarkable grab, wow. Our other Tight End, Incompletrius Harris, caught a nice TD, but also dropped a ball that hit him square between the 8 and the 4 that killed a second half drive. That guy is maddening, but Andy likes him, so he gets a lot of PT and a lot of chances to either shine or suck.

6. Scandrick is another maddening player. He made a brilliant play on a ball to get a three and out in the first half, and later, he got totally flattened trying to tackle Kittle. Another week without Berry or even The Mormon Wonder Boy Sorensen. Hopefully their return will help our secondary and our run support. The Niners first TD was a totally blown coverage. Not sure who lost their guy, but he walked into the end zone. I thought the defense regressed this week in stopping the run, especially in the third quarter. Grandpa Bob just seemed like his usual helpless, hapless self in the third quarter, with no clue how to stop the Niners offense.

5. Dee Ford had a good game today, but he also gingerly limped to the locker room with about five minutes left in the game. Looked like a groin or hammy. He had three sacks, but two were nullified by defensive penalties. Justin Houston was more of a factor this week, but we didn’t get much from Chris Jones except an offside penalty. Our defensive backs cut back on the DPI or defensive holding calls this week. But plenty of Niner receivers were running open.

4. Jimmy G may have been seriously injured in the fourth quarter. Nelson hit him near the sideline, and it was a clean hit because Jimmy should have went out of bounds but stayed in play trying to get more yards.
View My Video
Hopefully this is a lesson to learn for Mahomes. It just takes one hit to end your season. Pat’s been pretty smart about not taking unnecessary punishment. He got roughed up a little today, as he misread a couple blitzes that put him down hard. But he’s a big guy and a tough guy. I cringe every time he gets hit, and will the rest of the season. Too bad for SF fans, because this injury could derail their entire season.

3. Niners were their own worst enemy in this game. They had 147 penalty yards, and several of them were self inflicted, like personal fouls or jumping offsides on defense. They came in as the fourth least penalized team in the NFL, but Arrowhead in full throat will do that to you. KC’s O-Line had a few unforced errors today as well. But not many holding or hands to the face penalties as we’ve had in previous weeks. The Canadian Doc was bulldozing people. Both of Hunt’s TDs were running behind the Doc. Hunt had less than 50 yards rushing, but like last week, he was a beast in the fourth quarter and iced the game with a couple crucial first downs to sap all the Niners time outs and bleed the clock. Hunt seems to come up big when we need him most.
View My Video

2. Special teams have played well. We haven’t given up any big returns, no blocked kicks or punts, and fewer penalties on changes of possession plays. Buttkicker has been nailing his kickoffs, and has been accurate on this field goal attempts. He’s going to get fewer field goals and more PAT’s with Mahomes at the controls this season, so his overall point totals may be down, but that’s OK. Niners punted away from Tyreek, which is smart. Tyreek did have one spectacular catch where he went up high and brought down a pass among three defenders. The guy may be way under six feet tall, but he plays much taller.

1. So everybody else in our division lost today. That’s big for getting out to a good start in winning a third straight AFC West. Everyone said our first six games were the toughest schedule in the entire NFL, and we’re now three and oh, baby. Ford looks like the only potentially bad injury today, and hopefully we’ll get Berry back next week in Denver. We’ll get an extra days rest because we’re on MNF in Denver. Today was just a great day to watch Chiefs football, and hopefully we’re on to something very, very good. If we can just get a little more consistency on both sides of the ball, we could steam roll a lot of our upcoming opponents. Can’t wait for next week vs. the Donks in prime time.

Him growing up around his dad being a professional baseball player will help in that.

The offensive stuggles in the second half may turn out to be a good thing long term.

Guys, George is like a walking Chiefs encyclopedia. Not only can he tell you the stories, but he's been there firsthand - and first row - to experience so many of them.

Fun group, and, well, 3-0 with a 23yr old franchise QB. This is as good as it's been. The golden years are just beginning. Rep rep.

As usual, another stellar review of the game. Now that the checkdown dump off passes from the QB have been addressed and solved, I want more from the pedestrian defense. A few guys flash here and there as you pointed out George but then most of them revert back to being just guys or average. A different mindset and voice talking to them from the DC coach would be a start.

I was really happy to see the OL charge in when that wimpy 49er LB tried to cheapshot Patrick Mahomes II. They were in full Swiss Guard mode.
