Fred Phelps near Death.
This is the sanitized version. If you want to vent religious or anti-religious stuff there is a similar thread in DC. Go wild there. I thought this was enough general interest to post here in the Lounge.

I’ve learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the “God Hates pillowbiters” Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the “church” back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.

I feel sad for all the hurt he’s caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I’m bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes. -Nate Phelps

I think there's a lot of leeway in there to disagree about beliefs. That doesn't bother me at all, especially since I'm not a Christian. What I disagree with is the notion that the WBC (or maybe more correctly Phelps himself) is anywhere near "mainstream" Christianity in theory or in practice.

The way i see it is ...

i hope the media gives him/them ZERO attention because in a twisted way, they will enjoy the free press. I wont be picketing, no need to waste time on him.

It's a story that people want to see. It's the twelve year old girl winning first prize at the State Fair for an apple pie based on a recipe given to her on her grandma's death bed. It's the banker tycoon losing all of his money and having to take a job doing manual labor. It's the old married couple dying within hours of each other. It's the easily digestible pablum of "journalism" done up at a stunning fifth grade reading level. And so it goes.
